Realistic PT Combat

A lot have reported unrealistic results with PT boats. Here is a different situation where the PT boats don't even get a hit in:
Day Time Surface Combat, near Soerabaja at 22,65
Japanese Ships
CS Mizuho
CS Chitose
CA Myoko
CA Haguro
CL Nagara
DD Kuroshio
DD Kawakaze
DD Umikaze, on fire
Allied Ships
PT TM-4
PT TM-5, Shell hits 4, and is sunk
PT TM-6, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PT TM-7, Shell hits 9, and is sunk
PT TM-8, Shell hits 4, and is sunk
PT TM-9, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
PT TM-10, Shell hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
PT TM-11
PT TM-12, Shell hits 10, and is sunk
PT TM-13, Shell hits 14, and is sunk
PT TM-14, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PT TM-15, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

Day time made the difference. The PT's never got a chance to get close enough to be effective.

My first ptt boat interception was a desaster wit hthe jap dd's destroying them, as they should in reality

Out of what must be 20+ PT boats actions in a couple of start ups and an ongoing Scenario#15, I've had one mediocre and one good PT boat attack result with the rest essentially disappointing. All were using 6 boat squadrons.

I owned those PT Boats[:(]
When the surface combat screen came up I licked my lips and remembered all the posts. Five minutes later my boys were at the bottom of the ocean[:D]

my attack agains Kaleun was a nightime oops agains dd's.... made me feel good in a strange way, I really hated seeing bb's sunk by pt's... kind of like in Saving Private Ryan when a german tiger blows up infront of a dying Tom hanks who is vainly shoting with his 45... it was hit by a fighter bomber....

Ok, so what do you do with the PTs if not for a big Surface TF ?
ASW, do not think that can do.
Help with short run transports ?
What to do with those PTs ?

Were #4 and #11 really lucky or did they chicken out?
I have gotten wacked by PT boats several times as the Japanese. DDs seem to handle them well but night time bombardment TFs with mostly capital ships don't fare well against the PTs.

I've been on the revieving end of a group of PTs several times and I have seen it go both ways. The way I like is when they get intercepted by my warships at a range like 20,000 yards where the pound the hell out of them with little to no return fire.. BUT, I've had them sneak up on me and plant a couple of fish into the same warships returning the favor..
The only time PTs are a sure thing (IMO) is against undefended merchies. I've had some invasion TFs beaten up by PTs before and its not a pretty sight.
The only complaint I have dealing with PTs is that if there are 5-6 PTs my 10 warships always pick one and blow the hell out of it with everything they got.. The ship gets hit with like 20 4 & 5 inch shells and occaisonally some torps too. I wish they would spread their fire out a bit more..

Scen 15: 11th Dec. Me (allies vs AI) PT-35 Dashes into Vigan at night gets CL Naka with 1 torp and 5 shell hits - On Fire, Gets DD Natsugumo with 3 shell hits - Then gets blown to bits with one 5" shell. PT - 34 Bumps into a 10+ Cruiser/Destroyer group outside of Manilla, Gets hit with 40+ shells many 14", 8", 5" and proberbly bows and arrows as well as dosn't sink until next round!!! Must have had some kinda Philadelphia experiment gear on board!!
