I am working through the tutorial and have saved the game up to the completion of the Japanese turn. I found that when I created an american carrier task and clicked on a CV in order to check an air group the program threw me out of the game and back to the opening screen.

You need to apply the patches. That'll fix that problem.

Grab the 1.2 patch from the Members area of the Homepage, then snag the 1.21 from the FTP server:
