I downloaded the demo yesterday and am now contemplating getting the full game. I have one question though; I accepted a mission to attack the Udal (or something like that) but after several tries I still end up sucking vacuum. [:(] Any hints on how to conduct a proper ship strike using fighters? Thanks in advance.

A major factor that controls you getting smacked around by enemy frigates is how visible you are. You can control your 'stealthyness' by lowering your EMCOM level. Level 3 is normal with all active sensors on and full power to all ships systems. Level 2 is less visible, but certain things are powered down (fighter guns, IIRC) and i believe your sensors are put into passive mode. Emcom 1 makes you nearly undetectable (I've snuck up to enemy frigates under EMCOM 1 so that all i had to do to kill them was pop back up to EMCOM3 target them and let loose my (and my flight's) ASM (anti-ship missiles) and took him out without him launching any missiles at me or my flight. However, this takes some work and luck. You have to get your flight heading towards the assault navpoint and tell them to go to emcom1 and then go to it yourself and then coast towards your target. Be forewarned that your comm systems are set to passive mode in EMCOM 1 (IE you cant send orders) and thus if you want to order your flight to attack you'll have to increase your EMCOM level.
Other tips I would give you would be look for blind spots in PD grids, especially on dessies as they dont have any anti-fighter missiles and often you can get at them without any danger from their PD guns. I believe the Baikal class has no gun coverage when you attack from above, for example.
Also, some subsystems are notoriously vulnerable on certain ship classes. (You can cycle though subsystem targets with the ';' key) The Spectre class has a very vulnerable fusion reactor. Even if a subsystem is not particularly vulnerable, if you take out its drive or shield subsystem, you are making it a much easier target.

while we're on that subject..you have any idea how to take out mines..if you have no rockets left..since I try to attack them but their guns always get me when I level and try to shoot them with fighter guns

Missiles (SRMs and MRMs) work alright, and guns can too if you are good at vectoring out of their line of fire.

Disable your auto-flight mode and SKID in to get them ... if you fly straight into the guns, you will get peppered ... also keep the speed way up ... you need to close to in shooting range VERY quickly. Keep away until your gun is fully charged then come in fast and bob around a lot until *in* range then line up and power blast it.

Mines: no need to take out an entire mine field in one mission. Even ship assualt missions sometime slast two or more missions. Go back and reload.
When I attack mines as soon as Im out of missiles I head back home.

Thanks for all the answers! Just bought the game a couple of hours ago, and I'm really enjoying myself so far. I', having a bit of a problem assigning the buttons of my Saitek X-45, but other than that the game runs beautifully. [:)]
