My guess? Two years.

TWO YEARS?! [:@] Are you just being overly pessimistic? 2 Years?! Are they re-inventing the wheel, or what?

They already let almost a year go by after signing the deal with the Aussies to develop the Matrix version of the game. Basically, Matrix concentrated its resources on Flashpoint Germany first, and that game hasn't been finished yet either. It won't surprise me now if it takes another year or two.[:(]

My opinion on release date

Christmas 06. This is WIF with AI and PBEM, not third reich. Expect it to take a while and be worth the wait. Maybe Christmas 07 if things hit some snags. Now, if the designer is changed again.......

We've waited years, what are a few more?

-Note- These are my guesses based on complexity of game and the fact that Matrix doesn't let buggy games out the door.

So many things can happen meanwhile. I could be chrushed under a meteor, I could grow old, to old for PC games, the Internet could be hacked by terrorist unabelig DD,....

Oh, well. I guess whoever waits for something good does not wait in wain.

Lets keep things in perspective here. Matrix was already doing FPG when they signed up WiF. They quite responsibly decided to finish off FPG first and that game is almost done. I can't talk about release dates, but as a FPG betatester I can tell you that I have no outstanding tasks on my FPG To-Do list. Draw your own conclusions.

Robert Crandall (FPG and WiF) programmer has been sticking his nose into these Forums and been surprisingly open and honest about what he needs to do. IMHO he is not committing to dates because he doesn't yet know the size of the animal nor how long it will take him. Let the guy finish off FPG and then get a handle on WiF.

Maybe it will take another year or two. That's not anyone's fault... that's just Reality.

I don't mind waiting for a good game. I don't know how long I waited for Civ 3 and Masters of Orion 3 only to be sorely disappointed. So when I say Christmas '06, I am being realistic and not pessimistic. I wish Sid was still working on Civ 3 and Allan was still working on MOO 3. Maybe Allan can give me a free copy of Totaller Krieg to make up for the $50 I spent on MOO 3??

Anyway, don't we need plenty of time to play our Korsun Pocket, War in the Pacific, World at War and Empires in Arms while we wait???? (Not to mention Flashpoint Germany and Guns of August.) Just don't call me a Matrix fanboy yet.

Probably after Matrix puts WiF back on the "Select Game" pulldown, works on the graphics, creates some screenshots, puts up a FAQ list, beta tests the game, and feels its ready for release.

[8|] Earliest? (IMO) Probably late next year. [8|]

[:D] No I didn't. Minor enhancements are covered under "and feels its ready for release" [:D]

But seriously now, I think the hardest part for Matrix will be will be creating a PBE system for MWiF. [;)]

AI vs PBEM

Methinks AI will be harder to implement than PBEM. PBEM will just have the WIF "purists" up in arms because compromises will have to be made to play a turn in a reasonable time. AI will have to adequately play one of the most complex games in history (Deep Blue may have had it easy against Kasparov).
If we can accept things like declaring strategic bombing and ground strike missions at the same time, PBEM may be a lot easier.
