While its Jan 1942 and Allies are pretty much in a retreat mode in Burma/malaya, PI and starting to get pressured in DEI...

I ran a couple Chinese armys into Pakhoi... Silly AI (its brain dead of course) had mere Base unit there... result was Taking of Pakhoi and oh my... 2 AG Ships scuttled by japanese... valuable AG ships...

I also Marched another set of Armys into Hanoi taking it vs a base unit, and now The land connection between Indochina and China for Japans cut, I'm headed to Haiphong now...

Of course I seem to have pissed off the AI....

It's brought plane groups in and my 2 separate armys are under betty, sally, lily, sonia bombing runs..

You need to read my AAR. I've got almost the exact same thing occuring in my game. (Except for sinking those valuable barges. Haven't done that yet. [:D])

Yeah, I thought invading Indochina resulted in the instant creation of three entire enemy divisions.

As for the AI, the consensus seems to be that it gives you a good game if you play quasi-historically and on Hard or Very Hard. I'm sure you can "break" it if you do things out of the box. I'm almost to June 42 as the Allies, and things are pretty much on schedule everwhere, except that I'm still hanging on to Batavia and other spots in the DEI. Yes, the AI is way too passive in China; I've taken one city there but otherwise left it alone. I kinda want to play out the war the way Mac and Nimitz did, so I'm building up on SOPAC, preparing to fight for Guadalcanal and Port Moresby, etc.

At game start, move the Chinese army towards Hanoi. Three VNM divisions will appear.
1 in Haiphong, 1 in Hanoi, 1 up north with the Burma Army HQ.

They are small divisions at about 150 assualt points and crappy experience.

And one of those militia divisions is kicking my Chinese's butts. They have twice now punted back over the river multiple Chinese units entering Haiphong's hex. [:o]

I never said they would not kick Chinese butt.[:D] Worst case is it frees up that nasty full size IJA division from Hanoi to come out and play. I just love it when one of my PBEM opponents crosses the border.

What IJA division in Hanoi? Where do you think those Chinese troops attacking Haiphong are coming from? [8|][:D]

(Actually, I should try to find out what happened to it 'cause it sure weren't there when the Chinese marched in.)

A great bid 'ol division starts Scenario 15 in Hanoi. I already figured you had Hanoi and dealt with it. But if you are playing the AI there is no telling where it is.

I for one would just love to know the "rational" for their appearance. The Vietnamese
didn't like the French or the Japanese either..., why should they only decide to fight
if the Chinese move in? And fight on the side of the Japanese, whom they hated just
as much? If the Vietnamese appeared, and fought EVERYBODY it would make more
sense.

Not a clue as to the reason for it either.

It was some time ago when I heard about this so forgive any errors due to faulty memory. At the start of the war the Japanese put a lot of propaganda effort into promoting the "Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere" as something that would benefit all Asian peoples by being for them instead of "Caucasian Imperialism". Many people in various Japanese occupied areas believed this at the beginning of the war and volunteered to fight for the Empire. The locals quickly realized the propaganda was BS as the Japanese treated them as bad if not worse than the Europeans had and the recruits dried up. The situation was very similar to what happened in Nazi occupied Europe, where French, Dutch, etc. served in Wermacht units on the Russian Front and the various peoples in the Soviet Union initially welcomed the Germans as liberators. (Followup SS units quickly changed that too.)

It was, in a way, a success. The idea of "Asia for Asians" was very enticing for some, and even after it was pretty obvious that Japan was not exactly "liberating" anyone, it ignited Asian nationalism. The effects are pretty far-reaching.

I don't think the Japanese of the time considered that a "success". After all, they wanted those people to be patriotic for the Empire, not for their own tribe/nation/region. [:'(]
