When ever I take a "shuttle escort" mission the silly shuttle driver rams himself into the carrier and blows himself to smithereens. What's up with that? It really detracts from the immersion value of the game.

Carrier? Mine always seem to run into jump gates. Either that or they start off 600 kilos away from everyone else with fighter/bombers only 30 kilos from them...
