Russia can be taken out, but it's not easy, nor should it be. Player experience has a lot to do with it (as it should). Between 2 experienced players Russia should be pretty hard to take out as long as the Western Allies are focused on helping the Russians (but it should not be impossible). Don't let a few AARs fool you.

That's good to know. Because we know it's every gamer's dream to play as the mighty German was machine and take over he world! Plus, we have history on our side now so we'll try not to make the same mistakes as the GHC (Hitler). [:D] Personally speaking, I always play Germany in any wargame that I dive into.... [:)]

The trouble is, that applies also to Western Allies and the Soviets. [:'(]

We've been testing out a bunch of Germany v. Russia PBEM's over the past month or so. Its a challenge on both sides - if the Western Allies don't stage some kind of diversion to keep the full might of the German Army off Russia (or at least support them with plenty of supplies), the Soviet Bear is in trouble.

On the other side of things, once Germany commits to Russia - they are stuck...any weakening of the Eastern Front is just asking for trouble. I believe as we go that it will be a real nailbiter as to the results.

Curious ...

Does Germany have the option of a 1 front war? Can they *not* open up against the west which delays entry of countries like England and the USA into the war or does the game start with the war already declared?

In Sp40 England and France are in the war, the US is frozen (ie. can't move) and the US factory production is only at x1.

They can try to reduce England to nothing, by taking England and India, not really making East front a one front war as US will attack eventually... But by the time this is done Russia is bigger, lots of trade offs in this game

fyi I am a new playtester to ggwaw

Thats not the same as not attacking west to keep England/France *out* of the war until such time as Russia has been put in their proper place. I was interested in seeing that type of *what if?*

right, not available to not attack west... as stated above the game starts with war already declared. and no political points... so you cannot spend to activate or keep neutral.. fyi

That would be too ahistorical IMO. Germany were historically allies (or quasi-allies) with SU. Earliest of the game scenarios starts in Spring 40 - Poland is already occupied, and Germany is in war with France and Britain. SU does not enter the war until attacked or January 43 (whichever comes first). Same goes for US.

Bear in mind although they are part of the same playable side, US and UK are separate countries. UK starts the game at war with Germany, but US does not!

So if the Germans conquer or neutralise UK quickly they can start a one front war vs. SU. US won't enter the war until attacked or Jan 43. This is the most "one-frontish" situation Germans may hope to get.

O.

Given the limited resources of England until the US comes into the war, you can, in fact, focus on the Soviet Union if you want -- especially if Japan chooses not to attack the US, prolonging the date until the US comes to play. Of course, you do need to keep a minimum level of defense up or at least give the WA something to worry about (like a move through North Africa, which is probably necessary anyway to build your resource pools).

You guys aren't seeing all the games so maybe this isn't evident. However, I have successfully attacked and defeated the USSR by "focusing" on them beginning in 1940, and am currently being defeated by a German player using a similar tactic.

Moscow lives, but the units there can do nothing but defend, as the Moscow factories can't build enough supply to allow for a full offensive...plus, if I moved those units out of Moscow, the defense would be so weakened that I'd probably lose those factories on the next turn.

Here's the current state of the game.
