Terribly slow..

Well.. i got myself WITP, and found it to be terribly slow. The turn in full campaign takes about 15-20 minutes to solver ( i mean the processing and AI moves..)
I have a 1700 celeron with 256 RAM, would getting another 512 RAM cut down the processing time noticeably or would i need a better processor. Also.. i've yet to patch the game.. would that help?

The processing took about 20-25 mins on my old 500 MHz. Now that I have a new 2.7GHz, it takes between 10-15 mins, depend on how much action is going on... If anything, I would recommend more RAM... My old 500 had 384 MB RAM and my new one has 512 MB... As for whether the patch increases speed or not, I have not seen any difference..

It takes right at the same for mine too about 20 min. But remember for example you are running alot of stuff, each air to air combat figures each airplane and pilot in combat. This is an amazing feat for the programmers who I do not think get engough credit no offence to the guys who thought up and brought this great game to all of us. THANKS A MILLION !!!!!

taking out all the background processing in windows, everything !!!!
speeds it up considerably, and then its up to you how much do you want to see for animations and combat reports, mine can do a turn in about 5 mins p4 1.5, good video card and 512 meg ram, but I usual slow down the combat reports and add animations, the esc when its something I do not want.. then it can awhile, especially moving half the MAnchurian garrison units in the beginning
good luck

Slowness
Don't forget to lower the delay settings for the different message types in Preferences, and hit the Esc key during the computers turn.

I went from 20-30 minutes on a p3 800 oc'ed to 1 ghz with 512 mb ram, to 5 min with reports and animations on on an Athlon64 3000+ with a Gb of ram. Sad when you have to upgrade your PC for a wargame! [:D]

I am running a 800mhz with 196 RAM. Takes about 10 min to run a turn without sound but everything else.

I running a 4 year old Athlon Thunderbird 1000 Mhz with only 256 RAM and don't seem to mind the pace at all. Maybe 20 minutes/turn. No biggie. Do dishes, laundry, walk the pooch, take out the garbage, put more beer in the fridge etc. Guess it's just me.[8D]

1.2 Athlon and 512MB DDR - and after disabling sound - the only slowdows are when plotting objectives on the map, or creating a TF.
(Can see the CPU spikes on those occasions, when running in windowed mode.)

Ok, I run my combat reports in under 30 seconds.
I run a P4, 3.6+, 1gig RAM and that's plenty wiht Win2000 and a 1.5Gig page file.
However WITP (and several other games) run so amazingly SLOW when I have Hyperthreading on. Go into your BIOS and turn it off and you'll find that it often makes things run ten times faster.

You can turn off all the messaging, animation, combat reports and it goes very quickly. You can look at the reports after the turn is resolved if you missed anything scrolling by. I prefer to leave the combat reports on, though, so I can see the results, in detail as they happen. I have yet to watch a single animation. And I have messaging on, but set to a very short delay and use ctrl-Z to race through all the useless recon flight messages during Air Phases. I'm down to about 12-15 min resolution on a PIII 650 with 256MB RAM. Down to about 7-8 min on a PIV 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM....

I too get about 7 to 8 minutes with a 2.28 GHz Pentium.
The things that help a lot are:
Message speed 0.1 sec (the fastest).
AI minimized. By that I mean if I am playing vs the AI I have everything set to Human Control. The AI can spend a long time thinking about what to do in the Aleutians or China and I prefer to run that myself (it takes me longer to plan my turn but not much longer as I am not doing much actively in either area).
I can even get about 8 minutes with combat reports (not animations) on. It only takes a second or two to glance at the reports as they occur and I enjoy that.

if you have a GeForce card, you will prob need to update to the newest driver that came out earlier this month. I was running 20-25 min turns and having very slow scrol speed..i updated and now my scroll is fine and i do a turn in 10 -15 min....i have a 2.7 Ghz intel chip and a gig of ram. also a 512 meg graphics card.
after i updated to the newest driver, i can even run my firewall and anti-virus in the background and it does not slow it down

I am running a dinosaur 733 MHz with a decent vid card (from 4 years ago[:D]) and 256 Meg running ME
**I thought the scroll was bad until I reset the daly to minimum [:o] (now it works fine)
**The AI planning steps (like barge creation) were taking forever...until I turned the sound off..now they move along pretty good. Too bad about the music though..I liked it.
**Also turn off hexside details and range circles during execution
**I have also disabled combat reports..so I walk out front and pinch back the azaleas or the rose trellis for a few minutes then come back and look up the text report and sightings (5-10 minutes for Scen 15)
**Try Ctrl-Alt-Del ONCE ONLY to call up active drains on system resources. A spyware or browser hijacker can really beat up your performance.
**Finally, I have noticed that my percentage of free system resources declines after a couple of continuous turns of WITP. The only way to fix that (I think) is to save the game, then reboot.

My turns were also incrediably slow until I clean my CPU fan. No my system works in a reasonable time. You might want to consider ensuring your CPU fan is clean and running properly.

in short : take a look at your game preferences, it will help youi speeding up the whole game. I have no combat animations ( no need to imho )
and no hexes ( looks even better btw ) reports on ( i want to know ) and almost no scroll delay and a 512 MB 1,0 PIII machine ( for this game - for REAL games I have other PC's ) combat takes approx. 5-8 min, depends on the scenario.

hehe yes, there are some other games out there which need some 3D Power from ATI - fortunatly, Matrix games doesnt require that power so I can use my super-ultra silent 3,5 years old 1 ghz PC [:)]
