It's not like Japan can replace these pilots.

I like how you destroyed more aircraft then were even in the raid.

As for suicidal, yes they were, did they not create kamikaze pilots later in the war? ) And there are lots of examples of them sending swarms of untrained pilots to their deaths later in the war.

Sending a raid without escort can happen whether human or AI is playing a side. If those Kates and Vals had escort available then this can happen. If they didn't then it is a problem. I think sometimes the escort fighters get lost or go with a different strike.

As for the numbers, don't forget FOW. You'll get a better idea watching the intel screen of what happened. You trashed him good, but probably not in the numbers indicated here.

Which (I hasten to add) happened to the United States at Midway.

I have seen it where the AI will set its CV fighters to a Training mission whilst at sea. It is also fond of Night Ops - Long Range CAP which is not the most useful mission.

If you are ever puzzled as to the AI behaviour just open up the game in Head to Head mode and have a look. It's enlightening.

I still think this AI was built to simulate McHale's Navy. :)

Like Caltone mentioned, owing to fog of war I'd guess it's possible you shot down as few as 15 of his planes (but probably more than that). And furthermore, I'd say the AI won this particular battle. In my estimation a fleet carrier is worth a lot more than even 131 bombers.

But you're right. The AI can make some questionable calls. Like continuing to send ships into waters that are dominated by enemy air. In the South Pacific campaign I'm playing now I've sunk around 50 Jap ships to my loss of 4 (and those were little Aussie MSW's). But on the other hand, I've been replaying some failed turns trying to learn the game. And that's undoubtedly made a big difference in the outcome so far.

It's FOW all the way. you've got 2-3 pilots claiming the same kill which leads to inflated numbers. as someone else said, go to the Intel screen for a more accurate picture. what bugs me is when a report tells me I lost 20 bombers and intel tells me I lost only 5. Can't my guys count how many came back from a mission.[&:][:D]

I'm aware those numbers are inflated, but are still gutting losses for the 'Death Star'.

In a full day of battle in the PM area, he's lost 120 Zeros/Kates/Vals, and half of it probably because of this one raid. (70 P-40s were also lost ).

And that was a convoy hit. The carriers are, sadly, 1200 miles away.

Maybe they landed elsewhere and had not yet reported in. Then their home units would still be listing them as MIA. Okay, I know that's a stretch, but with any game you have to have a certain level of suspension of disbelief...
