Great job, Cap, this is the best AAR format yet. (And probably the most work, too, but it's worth it!)

To: Gen. D MacArthur, CIC USAFFE, Manila
From Adm Hart, CIC Asiatic Fleet

Doug;

Here is a synopsis of the action at Cagayan de Oro Bay from the ship's log of the Natari. It fell into Phillipino hands when the ship's crew was trying to ferry it ashore along with a wounded Rear Adm Yoshida and ship's Captain, Sasaki after the Natari was left dead in the water. Seems the boys on the Boise really rang their bell.

Ship's log, IJN Natari, CO, Captain Sasaki, Task Force Commander-Northern Mindanao Bombardment Force, Rear Adm Yoshida

00:12 Northern Mindanao Bombardment Force turns to SE leg of box patrol 3 mi N of Mindanao and 6 mi NW of 3rd NLF transports and landing beaches. Force consists of CL Natari in the van with DD's Minuzuki, Satsuki, and Fumizuki in line ahead formation at 400 yd intervals. Speed 12 Kts. Sea state calm. Visibility ca. 4000 yds. Wind 4 Kts NNW.

00:20 USS Helena Class Cruiser making 20 Kts on course 100 is silhouetted by rising moon over Mindanao. Range 2500 yds! Adm Yoshida orders 25 Kts and gives the order to "Fire at Will".

00:21 Natari and Minazuki open fire. Numerous hits reported on target!

00:22 Star shells from the US Cruiser seen. Natari fires 8 torpedoes with 5 degree arc.

00:23 Minazuki firing torpedoes. Minazuki illuminated by searchlights. Minazuki suffers multiple hits, on fire.

00:24 US Cruiser turning to new course to evade torpedoes. Fire from Natari halted because of smoke from our DD's.

00:25 Satsuki and Fumizuki firing.

00:26 Minuzuki hit badly, explosions onboard, falling out of line to starboard.

00:27 Enemy Cruiser reaquired by Natari. Hits reported. Target on fire. Range now 4800 yds. Target moving away to NE

00:28 Enemy firing on Natari now. Number 1 gun destroyed on first volley.

00:31 Enemy concentrating fire on Natari. Minazuki now...... (Bridge log ends)

Remainder exerpted from log of Lt Cdr Honda (Chief Gunnery Officer aboard Natari)

00:31 Direct hit on Bridge! Lost power for 30 seconds. Target range ca 6000 yds.

00:33 Damage control party reports bridge destroyed Adm Yoshida and Capt Sasaki gravely wounded. Lt Cdr Honda assumes command

00:34 Cdr Onitsuka of the landing group asks and is granted permission to evacuate the transports. Minazuki listing badly.

00:41 Target range 9800 yds. One remaining gun now firing under local control.

00:42 Natari hit amisdhsips! Engine room does not answer. Losing headway. Satsuki and Fumizuki making smoke to our port.

00:44 Target disappeared to our NE. Heavy fires. Flooding grows worse.

00:59 Satsuki and Fumizaki engaging the enemy. No word from Minazuki

01:04 Friendly DD on fire, large explosions (possibly Sasaki)

01:10 Fumizaki explodes.

02:50 Fires better. Now making 2 Kts to NE. Adm Yoshida and Cap. Sasaki ordered transfered ashore to 3rd NLF surgeon.
