WAW vs HOI/HOI2

Just wondering if anyone can provide some insight between these two upcoming games (ok HOI is out already). Just an overview comparison of the potential similiarities/differences.

I see that both WAW & HOI2 will be released in ~ the same time period. Are they likely to compete against each other or will they compliment one another ?

Totally different games. If anything, they complement each other.

It would be a bad thing if gaming public perceive them as competing titles. I hope the reviewrs will make the difference clear.

very different games....

HOI/HOI2 is much more complex. Much deeper game, especially in regards to politics, tech research, etc. On the down side, the first was marred by an early release (although I logged many hours playing it). Also, I couldn't see playing that game multiplayer... way to time intensive and since its quasi real time - all players have to be present. Also, the game could be played in a very ahistorical manner (which is positive for some and negative for others..)

WAW seems more in line as a "beer and pretzel" type game. Easy to get going but deep enough so that it is hard to master. Perhaps an Axis & Allies on Steroids. I see WAW replacing Age of Imperialism in my pbem gaming slot.

(I plan on purchasing both btw)

Comparison to Imperialism is appropriate IMO. Not perfect comparison, but Imperialism is among the games most similar to WAW that I can remember. WAW is better though [8D] has more combat, plays faster and covers entirely different period of history.

Also I would not consider Imperialism exactly "beer and pretzel" game - it was very involved and complex. (Or am I talking about Imperialism 2? I did play one of the series, though I can remember whether it was I. or I.2)

The complexity level will be lower in WAW and I would say there will be much less micromanagement then HOI. Paradox Games has been criticized in Reviews for not providing a way to allow the computer to handle the lower level decision making. Matrix provides the complexity but allows the player to pass it on to the AI. Uncommon Valor or WITP are better comparisons with HOI.

Oleg,

"Age of Imperialism" and Imperialism are different games. Age of Imperialism was done by a small outfit called Donahue Digital and is basically a computer version of the board game produced by eagle games.

Imperialism was a series published by ssi... different game - similar name :)

I know that. But Imperialism had sequel named Imperialism II if I am not wrong. I did play one of them, but can't remember which one.

Yes, not I see I made a mistake thinking YOU was talking about Imperialism, when in fact you talked amout AoI.

Imperialism was about the 19th century. Imp II started in 1500. I liked both but Imp II was a lot better IMHO. Both had a nice flavor of the times but were not what one would call historically accurate. I have probably played Imp II more than any other game with the possible exception of EU II.[8D]

OK, it was 1500s game, so Imp 2. I didn't play original Imp (1).

The box for Imp I had a globe held in the palm of a hand and the subtitle read - The Fine Art of Conquering the World.[:D]
