				 ASW attacks and fuel loss

This was common in UV also. How come ASW patrol planes that attack my subs [even if the miss] cause large amounts of the subs endurance to be lost? It doesn't sound like a good sub commander tactic to dump most of your fuel in the middle of the pacific ocean [not enviromentally sound either [:D] ].

Does this simulate some other effect gamewise?

It's to simulate the plane harrassing the sub for a while ... driving it under, making it come up and run all it's engines to recharge batteries.

This is what I was thinking, but then it didn't seem to make much sense. Does recharging batteries really place that much of a load on the diesels? Or do they run an extra diesel just for recharging? Regardless, it doesn't seem like the extra expenditure of fuel would be that much, but then I don't know how much is knocked off after being spotted.

La, la, la. I'll just shut up and go away now.

Some do ... it's one of those generalizations ... go read up on the Gato's

I wonder how many subs ran out of fuel in the middle of the ocean because they were running from patrol planes.

Thanks Mr. Frag. I agree with this effect. It makes patrol planes an effective deterent to subs camping to close to bases.

I thought this was nixed in WITP as I never noticed it during testing. Subs don't suffer fuel loss when submerging and running submerged. Subs surfaced at night to recharge their batteries from running submerged in enemy waters (at least until they were fitted with SD radar). Why the extra fuel penalty is beyond me.

Acutally Mr. Frag, a US Fleet Submarine (Gato, Balao, or Tench) has 4 engines. To charge batteries, it uses 3 and 4 to charge, while using 1 and 2 to drive the boat. Also, chargine batteries doesn't take near the amount of fuel as driving the boat. Of course, the penalty is that the sub can't go as fast, but usually a sub would cruise on only 2 engines anyway.

I think we toned it down. I've never experienced it in WitP like I did in UV.

another aspect maybe is the sub commander dumping fuel to give a false sinking report ? (fow)... is this in the game at all, subs able to depleate their fuel to simulate false sinkings ?

Sub commanders did do that... but you don't dump that much fuel.... mostly you shoot debris out of the torpedo tubes, send up wood, lifejackets, that sort of thing.

I just want to drop a question here:
Do subs use fuel if they are "parked" in a hex?

Yes. I think they burn two fuel points per turn.
