When does the campaign game start?

I noticed how the last game started in Spring 1940 with Poland, France and the rest of the German histoircal conquests already under German control.
Is it possible to start the game in Autumn 1939 or the 1940 start is hardwired into the code?

1940 is the earliest scenario in the game so far. I don't think there are plans for a 1939 game, but I could be wrong.

France is NOT under German control when this game starts. Nor is Norway etc. Only Poland is under GE control when the game starts (and of course Czechoslovakia but it happened in 1938 anyway.)

It would be nice to see the 1939 start, or even a choice to start in 1938.
BTW - when does the "game" end? Hopefully one can play beyond 1945. In fact in the early part of 1945 Britain and USA discussed strategic plans well into 1946-47, before the A-Bomb stopped the war. It is conceivable that the war could have gone on longer.
And Japan, while losing islands in the Pacific was actually doing quite well in China.
Just some rambling thoughts...

I was originally in favor of a 1939 start, but now I think 1940 is probably best unless you really impose some limitations on what can happen in those two 1939 turns.
Game can go on through 1946, I forget the exact end date -- maybe the summer turn (third turn of the year)?

I have seen a lot of comments that the game will be quite moddable so some alternative scenarios are quite likely from gamers.

By not allowing a 1939 start how can the game be considered a World War 2 sim????
Quoting the first text on the World of War website:
“This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by eleven o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you that no such understanding has been received and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.” -British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, 3 September 1939
This implies a 1939 start????

Someone should tell Marc the webmaster to change that to: "British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, 1 April 1940." [:D]

[:D]
"2by3 - adjusting history to suit the game, since 1999." [:D]
I know laughing to one's own jokes is bad taste but this is funny on at least two levels (1 April being the Fools Day)

Ah yes, what game can be taken seriously if it doesn't include the Phony War?

Taking this line of thinking to its limits, one should probably start the war with the Japanese invasion of China in 1937...

I was misled by the first illustration in the "Fall Geld" game where France, Low Countries and Norway were under German control.
I guess adding two turns would not significantly ruin the game. The procedures used for introduction of US into the Allied camp can be used for Italy. I guess the problem lies with Soviets that are now freezed and incapable of swallowing Baltic, Poland and Rumania.

incapable of swallowing Baltic, Poland and Rumania.
they start the 1940 game with those territories (Bessarabia is not really on the map though, and i can't remember if E. Poland is a separate region)

Paullus captured them on turn one.

Only Joel can answer that [:D]

East Poland is separate region, under SU control when game starts. West Poland is under GE control.
Baltic also starts under SU control.
Bessarabia is "included" in West Ukraine province.

Based on the readings of the thread, is it correct that the additional 2 turns of the attack on Poland and the "phoney war" period is difficult to model due to the way Poland is carved up by the Germany and Soiviet Union?
Would it be possible to attack AND defeat Poland, Norway and Denmark in 2 turns?
One last question: Since the war started in September, and France was not invaded until May '40, then 9 months elapsed, not 6. So, does the game start in Summer 1940, losing 3 turns instead of 2. Just wondering.

I think one of the key issues from reading the AARs is that France falls in one turn no matter what and having it 2-3 turns earlier would unbalance the game.
