Editing game figures.

Having just become an owner of the CM special edition "Barbarossa to Berlin" game, I have taken to checking out some of the sites run by players doing graphics modifications for the whole Battlefront series. There is some work being done out there which can only be compared to figures painting, and the level of reasearch these guys do regarding uniforms and equipment is impresive. Once this game is on the market I hope it will allow for some bmp "mods" of a similar scope, certainly this is where a good part of the potential consumer base will want to proceed.

To be honest, I doubt it.

The game deals with Alexander's campaigns exclusively, and the figures are done pretty much according to the standard research sources.... even an "anorak" (which in this regard I am) is only likely to dispute small details - most of which are long debated differences of opinion anyway. Unlike WW2 sources are very limited, as was (known) variations between similar types of unit.

I doubt modded graphics would look any better, either (as they undoubtably do in Combat Mission, Squad Battles and others)... the screenies here really don't do them justice.

Nevertheless, it's possible to do. The game graphics are in .png format, which is essentially a better .gif file. Here's an example of one of the unit "filmstrips" for those interested in modding. I think that someone with a good camera setup could also most likely get their own miniatures into the game if they so desire.

There is always room for improvements, as well as new units, like Thracian peltastes or Bactrian kataphraktoi. I am myself thinking of doing some.

The unit graphics are pretty, but for my part I really don't like the "grass"/terrain texture - too dark and blueish for my taste :( .
Are those in bmp (or other editable) format ? Can someone give me the filenames ?
Thks

Yes - everything is editable but the terrain is not as easy in some ways as the figures. Check the Media directory. The foliage and such is in the "Terrain" sub-folder while the tiles used for each battle map are in that battle's named folder (like "Thebes"). Just browse through these folders and you'll see the images.
