This is what the other guys got today.

Hmm, 2 stacks, non flush decked hull, early style 5" gunhouses, and mine cutters on the stern, so I'll say its an early US Destroyer, Mahan or Farragut class.

I'n not sure it's a US DD. That looks almost like a German Seaplane, and it could possibly be a German DD. The gunhouse don't look quite right from what I can see with my old eyes. Possible one of the mid 30s class destroyers. Besides that, the transom doesn't look right. It's too square, but with some tumblehome right at the turn of the gunwale. But the seaplane is what gets my attention.

The floatplane really looks like the German Heinkel He-115 but I am not sure;if so the DD's should be German too.

I think it is German also. The mast is wrong (a small tripod instead of a pole mast), the yardarms are cross shaped instead of athwartships , and the bloody thing appears to have a crows nest, and a whole lot of deckhouse aft of the break. Add the transom which looks wrong, and the row of ports along the stern quarters, and it looks like a KM destroyer. Could be wrong, but that's what my first impression is when I saw it.

Excellent photo, I have never seen this. The transom stern is giving me fits, but the prop guards look like they are too far aft; could this be a DD that has lost its stern and has been given a temp bulkhead? Definitely German, perhaps a type 1936A or B. The AC, an AR 196? Alternatively, the last two glasses of wine have left me completely blind.

Its not an Arado 196, that was a single engined a/c, not a twin. For that matter, its not an He-115 (I think that was the Heinkel seaplane scout) either.

ZH-1 ex-Gerard Callenburgh I think. Like Isaac Sweers but captured by Germans.

The aircraft is a Heinkel He.115 B-1, at first I though it was a Fiat RS.14, but they only bulit 152 of them.

Yeah, for a moment I was thinking it was a Soldati class Italian tin can.

Definately a german DD. from that angle impossible to tell if its class 34, 34a, 36, 36a, 36a mob or 36b.
Maybe classes 36a, and 36a mob can be ruled out because the gunhouses look rather like 12,7 cm than 15 cm ones.
Picture must be taken between late 1941 (has those square liferafts and a FuMO 21 on the bridge) and 1943 (most surviving german dds recieved major AA refits).

The seaplane is a He 115.

Maybe picture is taken on operation cerberus or some operation off norway, saw it somewhere before...

It is a German destroyer escorting BB Scharnhorst during operation Cerberus, and the floatplane is a He 115. However, can't identify which of the escorting destroyers it is[&:].

Think so, too. AFAIK only the type 1934 type and type 1934A had this crows nest. Radar look slike "Seetakt". I say it's Z4 Richard Beitzen.


Edit: Ah, looking over some pictures I'm no longer sure about the crows nest, the type 1936 look quite similar. In fact, all German DDs look quite similar. [:@]

A quick question: how many guns do you see on those turrets?

Singles, but all German completed Zerstoreren carried singles in the rear. DDs like the 1936A(MOB) had a twin mount forward, but singles on the stern.

One per turret. ZH 1 has this armament. Has a squared off stern, notably used if ship had minelaying capability, which ZH-1 had.

Image source does not identify the ship, it does Identify the ship Not sean, which is the Gneisenau, just off to the upper left (I croped it out), so because of that the DD in the Image can not be a Type 1936B, as noted the upper works apear to be the give away.

those are mine (cable) cutters on the stern. i thought they were propeller guards to keep a crewman out of the propellers in case a he fell overboard.
