What does it mean when it states a city has 240 FIRES?

240 fire levels. works the same as with ships. Higher the #, more intense the blaze(s) the longer it takes to reduce them to zero which translates into more eventual damage.

Fire level is divided by 10 each turn so the 240 fire level will be 24 next turn. Both are small fires. Firestorms are in the 5000-8000 range.

Do these fires get started by accident? All I did is hit a couple of manpower units.

Fires will usually be the easiest/biggest result of your city attacks. Hitting industrial targets (including manpower) is tougher.

I don't recall ever seeing fires before. Maybe I didn't look that closely though.

I have only started fires after manpower attacks. The bombing only damages 1-2 manpower but the fires take out almost everything else in the city.

City Attacks against Manpower Resources are a special type of attack.

When used, the aircraft bomb the place with the intent of creating a firestorm.

This is the FIRES: #### that you will see in a mouseover of the location.

It burns over multiple turns, lessening as time passes.

Each turn that the fire is burning, all Production type facilities have a chance of being Damaged and/or DESTROYED.

Apart from Atomic Bombs, this is the only method of permanently destroying facilities.

Destroyed facilities count double towards score. This is how the Allies win the game against Japan without using their nukes.

Consider it the gift that keeps on giving! [;)]

This is actually one case where the manual tells all:

FIRES can only be started by City Attack -> Manpower
The FIRES level is divided in 10 every 12 hour pulse i.e. half a turn.

I know, but I have given up on telling people to read the manual. One can only slap people for so long before ones hand hurts. [8|]

It is nice to see that some of you still do read manuals.

Hey, I did read the manual but that was almost four months ago now. Hard to remember the especially arcane material that never actually comes up in a game. [>:]

Is there a max fire level? Is there a level at which every structure in a 5 mile radius spontaneously turns into a small pile of ashes? What exactly do you need to hit the place with to cause 200K fire, or is it cumulative?

I'd say an A bomb would do the trick.....

Seriously though, based on Tokyo in real life, I'd say 2 or 3 consecutive days of about 300 B-29s would do the job.

I havent gotten out of 1942 yet. That kind of firepower seems mythical to me.
