A holiday extra

The story goes...

There I am this summer, driving from Medveja to Sv. Filip i Jakov (sea resorts on the Adriatic) with my girlfriend Sanja, wind in our hair, music in our ears. At one point we have to move inland to shorten the trip only to find the new freeway supposed to be finished by than, naturaly isn't. One look at the roadmap and I say "don't sweat it, there's a nice road leading to the next working freeway exit". That road is straight enough, however, it leads through some of the more backward parts of Croatia, and Croatia IS a small country. So there we are, driving, wind in our hair, music in our ears, when suddenly I see an apparition. It can't be, I think to myself, you've had to much beer and stuff in the last three days. It just can't be. Two seconds of reflection, check the mirrors and - screeeeeeeeeech - 180 degrees and what do I find there? A restauraunt! Well goodie, I can get some refreshments and satisfy Sanja's need for coffee. And that with the view of something I stopped for in the first place...

There was this nice WW2 transport, and there was I, eyeing it from tail to cockpit. So naturaly, I take out my camera and take a photo of Sanja with the plane and she takes a photo of me with the plane. What you need to understand is the place is in the middle of nowhere, no houses, no animals, no nothing. Now what ever happened to the photo of me and the plane? I erased it. Accidentaly! Arghhhhhhhhhr!!! But all in all, it was a good summer. Nice and slow, just the way I like it.
I was also happy I could get in physical touch with some WW2 history, which is something you North Americanos have in abundance. It's been a while since I wanted to share this story and the photo with the forum and I finaly got around to do it.

Anyway, the question is - which plane is it (that's the easy part) and which airforce did it serve in (the moderatly easy part). The insignia is still intact, although barely.

Late model C-47, and former Yugoslavian air force?

You got it right. C-47 given to JRZ (Yugoslav airforce) after the Tito-Stalin Kominform standown. The US saw a window of opportunity to disgrace USSR and helped Tito with shipments of aircraft, including fighter (can't remember which). And that's the story of our C-47, collecting rust on a grassy field surrounded by mountains of inner Croatia. The best thing is, his engines still have an oil leek! I don't know if that's normal but it sure doesn't sound normal to me.

Nice pic, also nothing like finding an old warhorse when you least expect it. I had to dig out my old "The Pocket Guide To Military Aircraft and The Worls's Air Forces" to look up the markings, which I barely recongnized. Also in reagards to your, " The best thing is, his engines still have an oil leek! I don't know if that's normal but it sure doesn't sound normal to me. " I only worry about an aircraft especially an old one when I don't see any fluids leaking out [;)] , could mean there is nothing left i the reservoir, also gives the plane character.

I just think oposite (exept books) . Where in USA you can find plane from WW2 except in museum .

I'll tell her you said that. She'll be glad. She has survived my UV fever, the worst period of my computer addiction that is never going to repeat. I hope... That's patience for you!

She has been warned to expect the full brunt of the WitP assult to arrive in a few weeks and last a few years. However, I plan to do 2 games max, so I'll be quite reserved. I'll quote a pbem friend of mine: "real life always comes first".

Next time I post a pic of a woman, I'll be sure to have an airplane or a ship or a tank or something else military in the background so that it doesn't get sh1tcanned.
