According to the game manual, LCUs that are eliminated are gone for good. Is this true? In PACWAR they would eventually come back but have to be completely rebuilt with new equipment. If it is true what happens if you loose one of your command HQs or an important unit, like one of the marine divisions?
This will have a HUGE impact on strategy since if they really are gone for good it means fighting a much more conservative war and not taking any chances of a failure.

HQ will return after a given time (check the manual), however, any other LCU is lost. You might work around this by saving cadres, e.g. by picking up some troops by submarine or transport plane. In this case, if the main unit is annihilated, it is rebuild around the saved fragment.

Wow. Thanks for the reply. I read through the 220 pages in the manual, but missed that about the HQs. I guess I will need to try and be careful to make sure that all my invasions are going to be a success.
Maybe I should rethink whether it is a good idea to load up an Indian division and brigade on my first move to take to Rangoon since I may end up loosing them.

In order to rebuild I assume that the parent has to survive. I haven’t tried an evacuation task force yet, but if you use one, do you get the parent or a sub unit?
How do you evacuate with a submarine? Isn’t an evacuation task force a kind of fast transport task force which doesn’t allow submarines?

No, it doesn't have to be the parent to survive - any fragment is sufficient, they actually 'magically' turn into the new parent unit as they are the only piece left.
To evacuate with a sub you just send the sub to the hex with the unit, select the sub transport mission and load the unit of your choice.
