AVG

What is the best way to utilize the American Volunteer Group?
Should I keep it under China Command, move it, bomb ground units etc...???
I would like to know everyone's opinion on this, along with strategy in that area.

Depends on where the enemy sends the zero's. Against anything else the AVG will get lots of kills and build up experience and morale. The zero's can wear it out though and except under very favorable circumstances its not worth trying to fight them head to head early in the game.

In 1.3, it won't let me split the AVG...is it the same with everyone else.

Just tried it and it divided just fine with 1.3.

yes they rule....untill they ecounter the zero's and get eaten alive....as said..dor the rest.. happy hunting :D

I moved the AVG group to Rangoon, and also changed their command to Southeast Asia. They have been based at Rangoon since mid Dec. I use them mostly for LR CAP, for convoys that I have coming from Karachi with supplies and troops. Per the prev thread, they do not last long against the Zeros that end up being based in Tavoy. The present game turn for me is 25 Jan 42, and I only have about 17 AC left, but they do have 50 kills to their credit[:D]. I am now using them as escort for my bombing raids on Tavoy escorting Bleih I/IVs that I evaced from Singapore. The AVG still does pretty well against the Ki-27s flying out of Bangkok though.

I restarted the program and it let me...before, it didn't give me the button to divide.

I always divide AVG. I keep one part in Mandalay for stand down while the other two are in Rangoon. I rotate them periodically.

Is there any advantage to changing there command? I moved them to Rangoon and they are doing a great job even though they are still technically under China Command.

Changing their command affects their ability to recieve replacements. They have to be within 2x the transfer range of their parent HQ, in order to receive replacements. P-40b has a pretty long range, and I -think- China Command might be in Chungking; so if AVG is based in Rangoon, and Rangoon is within 2x the transfer range of Chungking (and your AVG is still assigned to China Command), you'll be ok. Otherwise, you won't be drawing replacements.

According to the page 194. of the WiTP manual, and from my experiance with the game so far, the HQ a unit is assigned to has no effect on receiving replacements.
The only thing that matters is if you have more than 20 K supply in the base they are stationed at, or if you don't have requried supply level, be in transfer range from the HQ the base is attached to, and that base needs to have 20 K supply.

Well that's the kick. There's aren't that many bases with 20k supply with which to base your aircraft. Most of the piddly AFs in Burma that are trying to collect their rice and bullets via trails never get near that much supply. However, it's not that hard to get 20k at Rangoon (which is why it hurts so much when it falls).

I was also under the false impresion that having units attached to the nearest HQ helps, my AVG was paid in full PP cost to shift to Southeast Asia HQ, just before I found out that the base supply level is enough, regardless of HQ attachment. [:D]

I still keep my AVG at Rangoon, devided in three groups, with alot of supply so getting replacement AC is no problem. The real pain is getting replacement pilots. US Army pool is still well over 800 but the pilots come in very slowly into India theater... The trick that helps in getting replacement pilots is to fly undamaged AC out of the base, and than, magically, partial unit left without pilots gets them ASAP... The pilot distribution routine could be reexamined by MG.

I agree, Rangoon is the best place for the AVG, as was historically.
Basing them in China seems like a waste to me, but I'm just starting a game for the first time.

Actually, for ACG, I like to put them anywhere that the Zeros are -not-.

Usually, Rangoon is a magnet for AVG, but that also means that your opponent will (should) also match you up with the nasty Zeros. I've had success in China proper, where most of the obsolete Japanese aircraft end up. Bounced a few sqdns of easy kills. It's not that my opponent worries if I kill Nates themselves, they're fairly worthless. But what I'm really trying to do is deplete his pilot pool. I'd rather kill 10 Nates (and the mediocre pilots) and deleplete his pool, than trade 1 to 1 for Zeros and their experienced pilots. It also makes him try to chase me around with Zeros, which ends up tying up twice as many enemy fighters (the sucky Nates that you're killing, and the Zeros that you're trying to stay one step ahead of). If the Zeros are trying to kill AVG in China, they're not slaughtering your Buffalos in Burma.
