SP 2&3

After a few years without being able to play these games on my XP machine I loaded Win 98 on a old machine and loaded the games. Neither game would start correctly. I played around some with the settings but still no good.
I believe when I first bought them they worked fine so does anyone have any ideas I can try?
Thanks

SP 2&3 are pretty much dos programs. Try creating a short cut on your desk top in Win98 and right click on the short cut, theres some setup that you can do there.
If you still have dos 6.21 & Win. 3.1 try loading them.
If you have Win95 [not Win95B] try that.
Just some old thoughts

I have ME and had the same problem. I finally got it to work in the DOS box, but also had to manually reset my video to 600X800 I think. Not sure about the graphics setting, been a while.

I think the last time I got any of the SP's I, II & III to work any where near right, I upgraded 3.11 to Win95 and then did an upgrade to Win98 original, it keeps all the Dos setup from 3.11
Then I screwed everything up by buying Win98 se the full version & upgraded to Win Me.
But I had enough parts stored away to rebuild a 386/17, 486/66 and a 586/200 ODP, most all of my old games still work on those two.
I also have a machine running Win 98 Se with an AMD K6-550, that a great machine.
But I love Xp Professional full version on my new machine for playing todays Sims great everything.

I found out after about 2 weeks of banging my head against the wall, that SP3 does not auto reset your graphics. Like alot of the newer games do now a days. You have to manually reset the graphics.
I felt like such a fool.

Most if not all of the newer Video cards don't support anything lower than 800 x 600. I think those old SP's were 640 x 480/256, 16 or 24 color, that could be the reason. The video card just ignores the attempt to change it's setting.

I think I use to play SP I & II on an old Creative Labs Blaster video card with only 4 meg.
SP III I played that on a 3dfx vodoo3, 16 meg card, that was real gaming.

I am still using my Voodoo 5500 64 mb graphics card. I have yet to find a game out there I can not run smoothly on it.

It makes you wonder if all the advancements in the new super dupper video cards and driver really improved anything.
Gaming was so nice back in the days of 3dfx, now part and parcal of Nvidia.

3dfx made the best cards in my opinion.
I heard a long time ago that some of the ex-3dfx employees made off with the only 10 copies of the Voodoo 6600 right before they got taken out.
Read in the article I read that someone tested the 6600 against the best cards around about 3 years after they got bought and it blew the doors off the new cards. I think they said that one of the cards sold for 10,000.00 on Ebay.
What I would not give to get my hands on that little gem.

SP1, 2 & 3 are all Dos based games.
Some people say that WinXP will play those games. I'm not one of them.
Some say use Dosbox & D-Fend to run them on XP, but I've never had any luck.
If you have an older machine don't throw it out. With Win95 & 98 and a lot patients you can get them to run.
I keep 3 older machines for the older games.
Have you tried Steel Panthers World at War 8.30, very good game, but it does have some problems with some of the newer Computer hardware.
Download the free version in downloads, if works okay on you machine you will forget about SP1, 2 & 3

My conection speed is to slow to try to download any large files. The main beef I have with my PC and the SP3 CD is the fact that all the free-be stuff works fine but the game don't.
Without sounding dumb; what is Dosbox?
I need to get an older machine to use for gaming. I think I will just purchaseSP:WaW and cut my losses.

Dosbox is a program that allows you to play most, not all older Dos & Windows games on WinXp, Thats the games that said they were Winows games but were really Dos programs like Steel Panthers II & III.
You had compatble with Windows & then there was made for Windows.
