COMBAT REPORTS vs COMBAT REPLAY

I'm playing SCEN 15 (I think - the one where the IJN starts out with New Guinea already conquered and all his carriers).

After a month or so of buildup my PBEM opponent makes his move on the New Hebrides. A 6 day carrier vs carrier furball results. My opponent sent me the Combat Report along with the Replay and the Fog of War became thicker but only sorta.

In the Combat Report my CVs launched a large number of attacks on a TF which apparently contained the Akagi and Kaga - both were alledgedly hit by 10-15 1000 lb bombs over the course of the morning and afternoon phases. Watching the Replay though I see my SBDs seemingly concentrate almost exclusively on Kaga while only apparently hitting Akagi with 2 1000 lb and 1 500 lb bomb in the afternoon raid. The interesting thing about this is that the IJN carriers do not launch an afternoon raid. The only reason I can see for that would be that the Combat Report rather than the Combat Replay portrays a "better reality" and both carriers were rendered incapable of flight ops by my morning raids which were reported to have scored no less than 5 bomb hits on each carrier.

In the same Combat Replay the S-41 was reported hit by a depth charge AND SUNK. When I went to make my move the S-41 was only slightly damaged - around 10 sys and 2 flt.

So what do other players think? Is the Combat Report a "better reality" than the Combat Replay as far as FOW is concerned? I never used to read the Combat Reports - in fact my present PBEM opponent is the first one to routinely attach it to the turn when he sends it.

Just for everybody's info, in a different game than the one that precipitated this thread the Combat Replay reported that Luganville had been captured whereas the Combat Report indicated just a battle wherein the defenders lost heavily.
In opening the turn I found that Luganville had NOT fallen. Thus it would seem that there is a difference between what shows in the Combat Report and what appears in the Combat Replay AND it appears that the Combat Report is the more accurate of the two (shines through the Fog of War better to report a more real reality).
