Can you play as all three sides

Yes you can! ... but only on single and multiplayer missions, as the stock campaigns only allow you to fly for one side - the Terellian Alliance.
To fly for a different side just edit any custom or multiplayer mission. Hit the edit tab and select the craft you want to fly for a particular side. Once you access the edit element tab, there is an IFF text field. This field is where you choose wha side this craft will fly for.
The codes are :
0 - for neutral (white)
1 - for Terellian Alliance (Blue)
2 - for Marakan Hegemony (Red)
3- for Yellow (used for pirates and independent enemies/other nationalities [:D])
4 - for the Zolons (Green)

I ignore if there are more numbers. Please check the game manual, under mission construction/editing. That should keep you going...

There were also few other colors with bigger numbers (to 6 or 8, I can't check it).
