New Planets

Well, I thought the old texture process I did for the b5 planets needed fixing.
So after some posts, some reading, and lot sof trial and error, I have come up with a new way of doing planets.
Here are 2 in game shots, and one of the source textures, takes about 30 minutes to do a texture now.

This is actually God like!

[:D] You and Milo should join up for thegreater good of SS![;)]
Now with gravity added, planets beeing converted to objects and the many other things you've been exploring open tremendous possibilities...
I am shocked... [&o]

[&o]It's great[&o]
but how do you make texture for planet, on what program?
or did you download it from web?

by hand:)
There are no programs that do that, and none of it is downloaded and its not nasa shots either, unless you know of a planet that looks like that hehehehehee
your like the 50th person who has asked that lol

Not true [;)] . Check out the LunarCell Photoshop plugin from Flaming Pear. It´s pretty good and definetly helps when generating planets or planet textures. And if you only use it as a start.
Anyway, good job on the texture.

Hehehe
I used luna cell for the b5 planets, its the reason I decided to do them by hand:)
Here, this is a pic of pretty much the best luna cell can do
About the only thing lunacell could be used for is really distance shots, or as a template, but then, it has to be very low detail or the fractals will show through easly.
I did try, to use luna to create the base, then go about detailing it, but it turned out in the end to be way way more hassel then any "random" features it might give.
The way I do it now, by using a blank sheet and detailing then coloring works a lot better.
For those of you who are wondering, you dont draw every last line and pixel, you detail it, blend the layers right, adjust contrast, lighting and what not then use the magic tool on various settings to select areas for coloring, then do the whole thing over again.
This one is nearly done, the bumps have been added to the clouds, even if ss supported bump maps in this build I wouldnt want to use them.. it would look odd so I figured it was best to add them to the map itself
although, it would be great if the next build had multi layers, rotation, light effects, specular mapping, and glow for the planets
(hint hint)

Indeed. An atmospehere glow would kick ass too.

Yes, for close ups it´s not the best. But as I sayed it´s good for a start. There´s a way to get around the fractal problem, start big then shrink down and blur. It´s good to save time on those ramdom patterns. Altough some marble textures / photographs can do wonders too [hint]
The cloud generator is pretty okay too.

Yeah, it would be amazing to transition directly from orbit to the planet, without having tu use the Orbit/Break orbit buttons, and in the process see the atmosphere around your ship glow, as you enter the planet's atmosphere. [&o]
What is funny is that all this will become possible very soon, the way technology is advancing...

Ya, I was thinking of messing around with that could generator and real nasa could pics and mixing them up.
I used a lot of leather, and some rock patterns in these two planet,s I have not tryed marble I"ll have to give that a shot, that idea with luna might be interesting too I"ll have to try it!
ahhh experimentation!

Marble textures with "veins" is great for having large water streams or dryed out streams ala Mars.
