Targeting Problems

I'm playing SS 4.03, and trying out the "Lawyers, Guns, Money" scenario. I'm discovering that I cannot target the enemy ships most of the time. I've tried T, Y, U and the various shift combos. I've tried remapping the keys. Regardless, I can only occasionally target enemy ships. Perversly, I can always target my OWN ships.

As soon as I set the ship on Auto (let the Exec take it), he blasts the enemy out of space. But that isn't quite as fun.

I've used no mods, and changed none of the controls until I tried remapping them in desperation. Changing them back to defaults did not help.

Help.

I think what you really need is targeting practice.
Remember that all weapons have their range and none of SS's weapons cover the whole extent of the game map.
Beam weapons can only target from below 51.6 Km of range and the crossair triangles (that show you that you can shoot now) will appear from 50 Km.
Missile weapons have larger ranges and are usable generally from 100 Km and the word "SHOOT" appears below the HUD, meaning you can send your missile ammunition away.
There is a sensor issue to.
Most fighters are limited to 75 KM radar range so even if you can see the enemy if he is beyond 75 Km you won't be able to target it.
Capital ships usually have ranhges of 100 or 150 Km.
And yes! In most cases "T" is still the ebst key to use whne targetting.
Does this resolved your problem?

No, it doesn't. The ranges were from 50k to (literally) 1k, and I still couldn't target. Weapons were set to Man/Auto/Def (I tried all three). I was in the default Frigate for the mission, and could not target either fighters or the enemy pirate frigate. I tried from Bridge and 3rd person view. I was at the default EMCON, and tried manually setting EMCOM 3.

Moreover, as soon as I turned over control to the 'Exec', the ship starting firing like crazy. Take control back, and I can't target.

I appreciate the response, and at first I was convinced that I was missing a nuance of the game. But so far I can't see that I'm doing anything wrong.

Try using Shift-Click to target other ships, especially when flying a capitol ship.
