Are they damaged? Under Auto Sub Ops, the AI tries to repair them before it sends them out again.

Also at the beginning of the scenario, it staggers the sailings so they don't all leave (and then come back) at once.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!!!! Never use it.[X(] Very frustrating once you realize the AI sends your subs all over the place willy nilly. Can't keep subs inport to repair, the AI keeps overriding you.

Whhaa..whahaaa..whaatt? I don't think electrical shocks and egg nog are what my doctor would OK for me after having sufferred a clot induced heart attack. Beer and the odd scotch or Jaegermeister is OK though, and if not, too damn bad.[;)]

I do get too pumped up about this game. It's been my wargaming dream for years and it is here in pretty good form. Always room for improvement though.

I have no restraint with the AI. I am by nature a micromanager in my games anyway.

Of course, micromanaging everything will only cause you to throw your computer in thru the window, pull out every fingernail to the nub and chew out all your hair. [:D]

Micromanaging is enjoyable for myself as well, but it would be nice if this was more a volunteer effort and not a necessity due to the AI's Gilligan methodology.

Did he want you (as the Allied player) to use Auto Sub or did he want Allied Sub Doctrine on? Big difference.

If you are the Japanese, say yes quick.

If you are the Allied player, tell him to shove that idea.

He as the Allies wanted this. Said his subs too vulnerable to DCing otherwise. He is an experienced player, so I agreed....

Actually, it wasn't too quick. I'm prototyping my first Japanese turn so I can get multiple PBEMs going (eventually), and I'm convinced (after reading many posts) that not many other Allied players desire this setting on. Ah well, he was kind enough to take on a newbie, and it is the Christmas season...

One thing I noticed different, we played a while under 1.3 with Allied Sub Doctrine OFF and my invasions of North Borneo were often intercepted by his subs. Under 1.4, in the new game with the ASD ON, he didn't intercept one of them. I presume this is due to the Allied Doctrine of avoiding heavily escorted TFs early in the war?

That is correct. Also, U.S. sub commanders at the start were very cautious, generally speaking, and some even shot by using (passive) sonar bearings only. [X(] This refelcted prewar training in the sub force.

They were encouraged to go after the high value targets, which were also the best protected. They were directed to patrol areas of the obvious high traffic spots (like invasion beaches or just outside major ports) that end up being the areas that the Japanese focused their surface and air ASW assets (what few there were) at. This doctrine (which was at the HQ level) was as much responsible for low scores, as crummy torpedos.

When the US moved to mid-ocean (Ultra aided) intercepts (and fixed the torps), the hits scored began to go up.

I quit doing a single 1st turn start as the Japanese. Too many people have seen either an AAR of my game or have been on the receiving end of one of my 1st turns.

Now every start is unique. Got to keep the people guessing. Plus, having 2-4 games going with the exact same setup gets confusing. I start forgetting who's turn I am playing. Gets scary when time to end turn comes and I can not remember what slot to save it in.[:@]

Just take copious notes and you can crank out a 1st turn Japan in about 5 hours or so. I did 4 re-starts with Ron in 2 hours each from scratch. All in one day.[X(]

My industry changes stay the same regardless of who I play, so that only takes about 15 minutes to do.

In playing against the AI, I am using both auto sub ops and Allied Sub Doctrine (as well as Japanese Sub Doctrine). I have so far been fairly pleased with the results, its early Jan and four japanese ships have been confirmed as sunk by allied subs. Yes, there have been some times that a sub will contact a TF and opt to try to escape. Think about it: if your torpedoes have been failing regularly and you just ran into a TF with loads of ASW, wouldn't you make use of the better part of valour and try for a more favourable attack elsewhere?

Another thing I have noticed: I have sunk six japanese subs, and three of them are listed as victims of aerial bombs. So it does appear that making use of ASW ops for your a/c is panning out.

I'm using auto sub ops because I have had a horrible tendency in both UV and WITP of forgetting to check my subs at sea to see if they are running out of fuel or torpedoes. Again, so far I am rather pleased with the results. Maybe I am easy to please...

Note: I am not allowing the computer to control the Argonaut, O19 or O20. I have too much fun leaving little surprises for the IJN with them...
