CTD when I try 3D mode

I have a Radeon 9600 Series video card and while not the hottest card on the block (rather poor actually) it should be able to handle the 3D play. Rest of the system is an AMD Athlo 2800+ 2.07 Ghz with 1.00 GB Ram. Any idea what is happening?[&:]

Have you got the latest drivers for your card? This can often cause this sort of problem. I'm trying to think what else to try, but I'll probably have to ask Phil when he's back.

I updated the driver through Mar 2004 (6.14.10.6462) using the auto update on the control panel system location. I still have the problem!! I am currently downloading a newer driver through ATI dated 12/13/2004 (6.14.10.6497) but this is subsequent to the release of the game and I don't expect it to clear the problem. Did you find out anything???

I'll ask him again. He's a bit snowed under so sometimes things slip through.

Buck,

Can you please post a DxDiag file for us to check? Thanks.

this will never work ... re-install motherboard/chipset drivers.
Could it be there was an issue with the IDE somewhat-port somehow drivers that come with that driver package .. can't remember atm. Better check the web for information.

Is it a dual channel card? Really 2 cards installed? Maybe it's a remnant from an old driver installation. Get yourself a reg cleaner...

I have no idea why I have two display devices listed. I have a Reg cleaning and nothing ever came up about those devices.

Now for the good news. Through a series of downloads to get Catalyst control center to load up and a clean up of older unused files associated with the drivers and control panels/tools, I have finally gotten the 3D mode to work. Yes I was able to enable the AGP and the 3d modes. A success story (and I don't have many when I start messing with things) but don't really know how. I downloaded and installed 1) new drivers 2) ATI Catalyst 3) ATI Catalyst Control Center (which needed Micrsoft's.NET Version 1.1 Framework)

Four separate downloads over a dial-up amounting to over 60Megs. It took forever but eventually success. Not really sure 3D was worth it but everything seems to be running right, except for the dual displays. I don't dare press my luck and change anything right now. Thanks for your help guys.
