Potential customer here.

Hi, ive briefly read about this game and it looks interesting. I come from the Earth and Beyond crowd and totaly loved and miss that game. I have a few questions to ask before I download demo.
1. Is this anything like E@B?
2. Will the developer actualy listen to the players and give us real feedback and not blow us off like EA does?
3. Is there a big fanbase?
4. Will there be regular updates/expansion packs?
Reason I ask these questions is because I fell in love with a game only to be crapped on by EA. Im very gunshy about games like these now in fear that I will play it, love it and get no support, then to be told sorry it dont make us millions of $ so we are going to cancel it and the hell with the mega fanbase it created.
I love space type games that are original in content as E@B was. Im not into the starwars games because no original story line that we already dont know the outcome of.

One of the reasons ss has all the cool features is cause of us annoying the piss out of milo till he adds it

1: I can remembe when Milo was working on the code for the game and a bunch of us Babylon 5 Fans asked if rotating parts could be added to the final version. And what do you know less than a week later we have rotational parts in the Demo.
2: Milo has always listened to his customer base since day one and I higly doubt that will ever change.
3: There is a Fan Base out there for it but for the most part very few post in these forums.

That's confirmed,
AncientAngel.
Some people (like me) post once in a lifetime.
But here we are: always watching and reading.
On the other hand, what need do i have to post when you guys already say what I would? [;)]
Ah, yes, one more thing.
Let me second that
milo is great.
He may not answer all your questions, but rest assured he reads everything you post and take it into consideration.
Which is wonderful, to say the least.
Buy StarShatter,
DethDealr, you will not be disappointed.

Uhhuh...
http://www.matrixgames.com/default.asp? ... e]ORIGINAL: marky
this is possibly the WORST game iv EVER seen[/quote]
And note from myself:
There are many games which do (some) things better than Starshatter. Rules of Engagement, though ancient game, made me great impression. Last night I decided start playing Starfleet Command (got it cheap), and when in first training mission voice introduced himself as captain Sulu, I didn't got much sleep that night
But there are not many games, if any, which are as versatile as Starshatter. That is Starshatter's strongest point: it offers something for everyone. That is also major weakness: game is too diverse and someone who is looking good strategy game will find out that strategy part isn't that good. When I was testing beta versions, I found out that starship ordered to escort my ship left behind over 100 kilometers and when enemy destroyer group came to vicinity, closest AI ship from my side charged towards whole group and I had to constantly order it to pull back and wait last ship in line. Very clumsy compared to Homeworld. I hope this is fixed.
However I guess this game has some heavy potential as multiplayer game and I have dreams about tens of people playing game as fighter pilots, starship captains and battlegroup commanders and AI can be used to increase numbers to hundreds. Played Battlefront (Xbox version) with littlebrother and it was very cool to fight as Stormtrooper as one of the hundreds soldiers and take AT-AT out to ride.
What I tried say again...? Yeah, Starshatter is not bad game, it is very diverse, makes me want play MP but there are better space combat simulations (Freespace), better starship simulations (I-War maybe) and better space strategy games (Rules of Engagement) than Starshatter. If someone wants all in one game, Starshatter is the Ultimate Space Combat. But for others like marky...
Game has its advantages and disadvantages. Constant need for babysitting starships of own destroyer squadron is disadvantage. Game should be easy to mod, there are few mods available and more are on the way, but Star Wars mod seems to be impractical simply becouse fighter formations leave fighters several kilometers apart. Etc. Many things in this game are good but nothing is perfect.

I've got bored onWitP forums, so I've decided to look around.
Is it something like X2 or BC3000? Is it closer to strategy or to sim? Thanks.

Hello Testarossa,
Actually it is both! It all depends on your starting rank! If you start from (as a cadet) below and make your way up to Grand Admiral as I did, you will begin as a fighter pilot and the game will be a sim, but all the missions you will be given to fly have a impact on the Global strategy of the faction you fly for.
As you move up in rank, you can command a capital ship, so you are still in sim perspective.
When you get from Commodore or Vice-admiral onwards, you can command basically any formation of ships (like a carrier squadron or a Cruiser Squadron), meaning that you will still have a "sim" aspec (as you pilot your own Cruiser, Carrier, or whatever your Battlegroup's flagship is...) but you order around all ships on your command, on the tactical level. This is most fun and gives you both sim and strategy.
I have always started from the bottom but I think you can choose to start with a more advanced rank.
Personnaly I always like to take it from the begining...
In alternative, the game has a great game editor, so you can edit large fleet engagements (my biggest mission has 40 Capital ships, 80% cruisers, as there are no BBs yet for this game).
All you have to do is specify the chain of command (what is the commanding ship - wich you will pilot), so you can actually find yourself commanding a fleet! How's that for strategy!?[:D]... while having to control your own ship or delegating the control over to your exec, while you watch the battle from the Admiral's tower, and order everybody around? How's that for Sim+Strategy?!?[&o]
It is a great game and has lots of potentialities!
I hope this answered your question... and if you want to see what fans are doing about SS, please visit

Translation: You start as fighter pilot, but when got higher rank (enough experience points), you can control 1 starship and command others. And game is not about trading like X2, it is about war.
while having to control your own ship or delegating the control over to your exec, while you watch the battle from the Admiral's tower, and order everybody around? How's that for Sim+Strategy?!?[&o]
Translation: when commanding starship, it is possible turn control over to executive officer (AI) and then player can order it like other starships under command. Alternatively it is possible fly mighty starship like in Star Trek movie Insurrection commander Riker fly the Enterprise (Riker maneuver).
So this can be played as starfighter simulation (Warhead), starship simulation (I-War) or tactical level simulation (Rules of Engagement, Starfleet Command).

if you want considerable breadth in a game, buy it.
-and/or-
you have more fun modding than actually playing games, buy it
-but-
if you want depth in any facet and consistent, sensible ai from your ship mates, stay away.
i played the game HEAVILY when it first came out, I had a great deal of fun with it until i realized that, as a starship simulator it was weak, and as a strategy game it was weak, and as a fighter sim it was weak
suffice it to say I was a disenchanted Commodore- one day I went planetside with the old landing party and never returned to space (the only reason I am on this board is because recently my land based ambitions have taken me to Titans of Steel.
what is the saying? ah yes-
jack of all trades but master of none
for extreme helpings of tactical depth, try Nexus the jupiter incident, only available through import.
