Combat model of WaW?

Hello,

could you please explain preciecely how combats are handed in WaW? Please post the specific attack/defence values of all types of units (from a starting-setup of one szenario). A "calculation" of a bigger battle would be appreciated. Let`s assume that Germany attacks with more sophisticated weapons (tanks, air) and the enemy is superior in quantity (infantry, militia).

Here's a quick reply before I run to a meeting:

Each type of unit has an rating for its power at attack and defense. These are further broken down by what you're attacking, but for simplicity, let's stick with attack/defense. For example, Soviet infantry begins with 4 land attack and 4 evasion. Now, by spending resources to create research points, I can invest in upgrades to each of these ratings. The cost of this research is based on the number of units I have in the field.

Each number in the rating equals a six sided die. Assuming no modifiers, attacker and defender roll their die. If attacker's roll is greater than defender, the defender takes a hit (two hits are necessary to eliminate the unit; one hit damages the unit and sends it back for repairs (if it can trace a supply line)). If attacker's roll is double or more the defender's, the defender takes two hits and is destroyed.

Actually, Soviet infantry has a 6 attack, and the defense factor is a combination of the evade x durability (both are 4 for SU infantry in 1940). Germany has a 6 attack and 6 evade and 4 durability infantry. So the basics are a German infantry rolls 6 dice and must roll greater than 16 for a hit on a SU infantry unit (average roll is 21 so there is a good chance of a hit). The SU infantry gets to roll 6 against a German defense of 24 (less than 50% chance of a hit). That is the basics, but there are other factors and modifiers that come into play. It can get quite complex, but is all done by the computer. The better you understand the details, the better you will be at playing the game.

That explains much about my W-L record.

The SU infantry gets to roll 6 against a German defense of 24 (less than 50% chance of a hit). That is the basics, but there are other factors and modifiers that come into play.
So to clarify: if a german inf attacks a single soviet inf with the above facts it rolls 6 dices and it has to roll at least 17 (one more than 4 russian evasion multiplied with 4 durability) which will be the case in may be 60-65% of the cases (just guessed, not calculated). A double hit (elimination of the soviet inf) is almost impossible as you would have to roll near maximum (33 at least), right?

On the same attack of the german inf, the russian inf counterattacks the german one (right?), but will most likely not hit anything as it would have to roll at least a total of 25 for it (with propably 35-40% of a chance), correct?

So in consequence, one german inf is very likely to score demage to the russian inf on an attack. Wow, that`s aggressive play[X(]: in A&A, a single inf would hardly attack another single inf!

But perhaps you could post another simple exemple: how are the odds of a german inf & tank against a russian inf?

I intend to and as your company is called Matrixgames it should be easy[;)] for you to post a matrix with the propabilities of a hit of one unit against another (and may be the chance of a double-hit in brackets as well).

horizontal: number of attacking dices (all relevant, so may be 1-10)
vertical: relevant defence values (evasion * durability), e.g. 6, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 28, 30, 32, 36, 40, 42, etc...

Sounds like a good idea to have such a chart. I did make one mistake. You need to roll equal to or greater than the defense to hit, and equal to or greater than 2x to get 2 hits. One thing to note is that if a unit has been attacked previously in the same phase, it's evade is lowered by 1. This is how numbers can help make up for poorer quality.

Parts describing various "nuances" of combat and combat resolution in alpha documentation are very large, and I wouldn't want to quote them here (because of the NDA, because they're still alpha, and last but not least because they're LONG [:D]).

Some things to note though: Combat is resolved in this order – Air to air, air to ground, ship to ship, sub and ASW, ship to land, land to land. There are many nuances and rules specifically for naval and naval air warfare
Does a aerial unit attack BOTH other air units and land units on the same attack?

First Air to Air. If air unit survives, then it takes flak. If it survives that, it gets to bomb. So an air unit could shoot at a plane and then bomb in the same combat.
