Crashes

Running a Gateway 1.5Ghz box, 512Mb RAM, Win XP with Service Pack 2. Went thru normal upgrades from 1.21 to 1.3 to 1.4; now running 4, whole war scenario.

Now, why does the damn game crash when checking the (I) screen (usually after displaying future ship deliveries) and, after saving a game, clicking on the "Exit" button. I go to black screen and eventually, the screen is black with taskbar lit, back to 800x??? view, and WitP is on the taskbar but won't run. Have to restart the system and restart the game.

Use the quit button/exit button or your escape key, not the back button when inside the (I) Panel. You'll be crash free.

Will that prevent crashes after I save a file and try to "exit" back to the game screen?

The back button has been linked to all sorts of unknown crashes ... avoid it like the plague and you'll never go wrong. As to it being related, it's not been proven one way or the other as the actual bug has yet to be found.

This is one of those better safe then sorry issues.

Frag,

He is saying he uses the exit button, not the back button and is getting crashes.

As I said ... the crash on save is *probably* related to use of the back button *elsewhere*. I never touch back and I *never* crash.

Frag, try listening once. Those of us who have tried to pass along information to you about how the save screen crash occurs have told you again and again that the crash ensues when you click the EXIT button.

Jeezus.

Try reading what I said again.

The crash at save is related to a blown stack ... the stack is blown from some other activity before you even get to the save screen. It has *generally* been pinned back to the same problem that causes the game to crash when using the back button. Avoiding the back button *elsewhere* generally results in not seeing the save crash.

As you will have noticed, no one *ever* complains about crashing on save after playing 1 turn. It is a buildup of leaks from something else that causes it after multiple turns.

Hi guys,

I never got crashes prior to 1.4. I have either used the escape key or the exit button. I don't ever use the back button.

Starting with 1.4, I'd get save game crashes about 20% of the time. both when using the escape key OR clicking the exit button.

However, I noticed that if I don't have any other program running on the machine, I don't get save game crashes. My operating system is XP. If I have any program or window open in addition to WITP, I'll get save game crashes about 20% of the time.

Speaking of fights, one of my favorite (chilling) fight quotes:

"Beware the leader who bangs the drum of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor. For patriotism is indeed a double- edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and patriotism, will offer up all of their rights to the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am....*".

I have had the exact same experience, also operating XP.

I just want it fixed.

See, Frag, you used to be one of us, and now you're one of them. We have here a phenomenon that never existed before v. 1.40, has been reported by a number of reliable users (I won't include myself), and can be independently verified to exist.

Your response? "Don't pick on me."

I had a client (I run a nonprofit service agency for veterans) come into my office last week with his wife. She spoke for him and said, "He's looking for work, but his disability stands in his way." I asked her what his disability was. She said, "Well, he's deaf."

It was all I could do to keep myself from saying, "Sounds like he'd be a natural for customer service."

Don't be deaf, Frag.

Anybody threatened you with a two week suspension from the forums yet for derogatory, irrelevant comments?

god this is like watching two sorority girls fighting over who gets to wear the pretty n pink lipstick

Mr. Frag is correct, nobody is complaining about the the save game one happening after the first turn. It usually takes several turns. Considering the complexity of this game, the vastness of the database I was surprised the game did not have more bugs and more crashes. That being said... I do hate the game save crash...but like someone in another thread said 'it could not happen in a better place'. I am just thankful that Matrix continues to work on this issue, considering the other fixes, features and support given by the company and in this forum I think some of the chronic bitchers I see in this forum should just put a sock in it. Your right:
I hate to admit it here, but for the last week I have been playing HOI 2. It, like other of paradox's games, is buggy. CTD's. My last CTD happened during a "save" file being made. Blew away a week of gaming. Sigh.
