The first is an obvious choice what are people opinion on what comes after the Big E. I am not talking about ship design but performance in battle.

Hrm.... I'd have to say Franklin. She took one Hell of a beating (Far worse than any Japanese carrier that didn't sink) and she friggin sailed to NYC on her own power.

Ark Royal would have been better suited to the Pacific had she not been wasted in the Med. A little harsh saying RN CVs were crap.[:'(] Shinano...that was crap. Bearn...holy crap.

? As in , blessed poop?[:D]
Well, as stated earlier, Big-E earned 20 battle stars in WWII. The Essex won 13. I'm not sure, but I think that about does it for second place.
Biggest disapointment: USS Ranger (CV4) earned 2 battle stars. Sigh. I served on USS Ranger (CV61), so that kinda saddens me...
Don't sell those Brit carriers short, they were built with a different operating theatre in mind: mainly LBA infested European waters. I guess they could have scrapped the older ones (Hermes/Eagle/Glorious/Courageous/Furious) to free up treaty tonnage for newer hulls, but the fiscally tight parliament wasn't gonna go for that. Look at the Taranto raid: 21 Swordfish cripple or sink three BB's. The Brit CV's gave good service in the Pacific in '45, their armored decks almost Kamikazi-proof.

Most of the converted carriers had large guns, iirc Kaga and Akagi also had a battery of 8" guns.

What about Furious then when she was completed? A flying off deck forward and a single 18" gun turret in the rear... Now THAT's a combination. [:D]

My second farovorite, after the Big E, would have to be Yorktown (CV-5).
