Do Units Gain Experience

I was wondering if through the course of a game, do the individual units gain experience?

The reason I ask is because of a comment on page 54 of the manual under "Use units in their historical role" that says "If you want to attack, don't use the infantry division that has just arrived as a reinforcement, put it into the line and use armor that you have been forced to use defensively instead".

In other words, you put the unit on the line to gain experience before using them offensively.

Is my thinking correct?

Thanks

What a fantastic game.....I can't stop playing.

Would be neat if they gained experience but I believe the attack and defence values are pretty much set at the start of the game. Your gold background 'elite' units are ones that have gained experience in battles prior to Normandy but no units will gain such distinction during the course of the game.

The comment on page 54 probably refers to the fact that armour is generally superior on the attack while infantry is more suited to defence. Bocage country does tend to bog the tanks down quite a bit tho. Armour really comes into it's own when fighting on clear terrain. [8D]

That makes sense. I guess it was wishful thinking on my part. Now, back to the war.[8D]

There are some units who evolve over the term of the scenario.

But I don't know the detail.
