I play only two games online and we use the "slow" play. I think it's the normal velocity ....

I prefer the >> setting, it gets things underway and if you want to micromanage something you can always take it back a notch. You can talk about these things before you start using the chat so you both know each others habits in this regard. Playing major scenarios in slow setting takes a bit too long IMHO.

are you able to change game speed during an online game? or is the same speed start to finish?

You are always able to change speed during the game.
If you set the speed to "slow" and your opponent choose "normal" the game run in normal speed. But if you change your setting to "fast" the game run in "normal" velocity.
In a multiplayer game the simulation run at the lower speed between the two selected from the players.

Actually the game runs at whichever player speed setting is the slowest. So if you pause, then your opponent pauses. If you go fast but he has set his speed to slow, then you will go slow.

All my games against Yakstock have been played at the slowest speed. It's a kind of unstated convention that we don't pause the game, except for non-gaming reasons. If I was playing at a higher speed then I would need to pause often which imho is not fair on my opponent. It's also slightly unfair to me since it gives a clue that something of importance is happening somewhere on the map.

Of course, then one could always simply pause as a deception.

As if any of the generals here would stoop to such a low down, dirty, trick!
