Game Idiosyncrancy or Bug?

Any ideas guys?
Battling through first campaign and I have come a cropper more often than not, as is my wont. However, I was trying to master the art of ground combat, when on two consecutive missions I lose power/throttle control after entering atmosphere (no combat prior to droping out of orbit). I switched to autopilot to see if that would pull me out of the death dive, but only delayed the inevitable. It pulled me up a bit, but as in manual control, it couldn't get speed up above 150-250 and nose stayed down all the way in. (first time around my wingman did the same thing!) Cheesed off so played safe anti-mine attack (thought I had those sussed! Nooo!)
Back to ground attack and everything worked this time (although I did use SRM's by mistake - but what the heck they all make big explosions - huh?) So what was with the two no throttle games?
Just finished 'cos I got really annoyed when I was having my best anti-fighter mission (three kills in first melee, with my wingman bagging a fourth), came out of the fight to find I had no throttle control and we had not even got to the first waypoint!!! I was still going on inertia though at 435 and thought I might muddle through. Nope. Another attack came in, I bagged another with my last SRM, riddled another down to orange with my gun and got whacked! They only gave me 20 lousy points for that!!!
WHERE HAD MY THROTTLE GONE?
I couldn't locate any damage on my engines before the second wave came in, so what is going on?
Since I'm here, can I ask why I cannot lock on to to some enemy targets, the mines sometimes give me grief and once I had an enemy frigate that was in visual range that wouldn't lock either.
I must emphasise I'm not bitching, this is the best space combat sim I've gotten into since X-Wing and I-War, I'm just hoping there is a explanation is all.
