To double-check: you cannot edit unit capabilities to reflect differing kit? If I wanted to add a unit on BTR-50, for example.

Yes you can. For individual units just go into the Subunits list and start replacing what is there with 'BTR50's.

We don't have BTR50 motor rifle companies in the unit table (yet) but using this technique you can fairly easily make your own. In the screen shot below just start replacing all the BTR80s with 50s and save it.
