One More LOS Question

Hey I have one more LOS question. I was wondering, how can you tell which direction a unit is facing? I know that the directions say that they face the direction they think the enemy will come from, but I was wondering if there is a "front" or facing side of each piece? It seems that (for me at least) I will set my units in terrain with long LOS, but they wont see the enemy until it is almost on top of them. I mean this by saying right next to them. The only thing that seems to extend my LOS to where my vechicles will shoot are my helos. Thanks, this is just one of those issues that I am having a hard time understanding how it operates so I have a hard time creating tactics since my guys seem to be using a cane to see what is in front of them, but it is more likely me.
One personal note. I want to make sure that you guys know that I am expressing problems that I am having and am not complaing. This is a great game. However, I also play World War II Online. Love the game but hate the fourms. Thank you all who post in these fourms for being civil, EXTREMELY helpful, and not making a long complaint list. Thank you all.

There is no "facing" spceifically in FPG.
I find the LOS function very useful and, in fact, I've actually asked that it be implemented in COTA if time permits, becauseI find it easy to use and, at a glance, you can see what your unit sees.
When I'm placing units or getting them to move somewhere, I turn on the LOS tool (L key) and hold the shift button down whilst clicking the squares I want to move my unit to...this allows me to see what observation point is best before I choose to move my unit

you see I get that and I do that, but sometimes the enemy goes into squares that my guys are supposed to see and are still not spotted. Maybe I am guessing the worng direction or something.

I was troubled by this at some point too. Now i think i have found out what the mechanics are for spotting. You have two values for each unit - the Max Spottable Range and the Max Sighting Range.
The Max Spottable Range is the range where this unit can be seen from if there is a clear LOS. But now we come to the Max Sighting Range. This is the Range the unit can see other units - but only if every condition is perfect. I think in battle, or barraged by artillery or moving of bad morale .. etc. this Range is perhaps internally recalculated taking into account weather and daylight-conditions.
In your case i think that perhaps one unit who was supposed to spot the unit wasn't able to see it because of the values.
Just my 0.02 cent.

But don't forget...this is a rough guide to the spotting distance. Alot of other factors are taken into account...for example the movement order type of the enemy unit, the weather conditions, your units posture to name a few.
Rob would have to give the detail, but it isn't as clear cut as "those squares are shaded...so any of my units can have that axis covered"...that's simply not the case.
It's like everything in computing...unless you know the rules, it looks like a bug...but because of the under-lying mechanics (and this goes for combat, movement and any other seemingly "straight forward" issues) it's actually part and parcel of the game....anyway...if Rob is listening, maybe he can enlighten you...but he's very busy on patch 1.0.1, so be patient...k?

Thanks guys. I don't think its a bug, its just something that I am not getting. Some things just seem arbitrary and I am just trying to figure it out.
