For the EiA experts.

If a combat goes into a second day can a defending army fall into
the city on the second day?

I think that not, because the second day of combats is not a new combat, but the continuation of the previous one. And the first step of combats, even before of the selection of chits (in fact, it's not even part of the combat sequence) it is the retreat into city. [:)]

The only changes that are made in the second day of combat are the reduction of the morals in 0,5 (7.5.2.6.2) and that you can no longer apply the chart of river crossing (7.5.2.7.1) [;)]

if you choose not to fight but to withdraw before the next day's fighting, you have to withdraw to an adjacent province - no allowance is given for retirement into a city in the present province
