I thought today I'd show off the Dutch ships.



The Coast Defense Battleship De Zeven Provincien, famous for the 1933 mutiny.



The Coast Defense Battleship De Ruyter.

While classed as BBs, in reality they are light, slow armored cruisers. Throwing them against dreadnoughts would be suicide, though De Zeven might be able to hold off an older Japanese predreadnought. With 9.4inch guns, De Ruyter, her sister Hertog Hendrik, and the near sister Jacob van Heemskerck are totally out classed. The latter three can match armored cruisers (not in speed.) They are best suited to fight a delaying action, or to be saved to be expended in coast bombardment.


The Torpedo boat Z3, one of 8 torpedo boats and 2 classes of Dutch TBs in WPO. To separate them out from DDs, I have classed them as DEs.

Touching on the Coast Defense Battleships, I think there is a good tactic to be pointed out, and it was originated during WWI. In the late part of the 1922 campaign, or all through the 1926 campaign, the US (and to an extent, Japan) will have an ample supply of dreadnoughts and battlecruisers, so what is to become of the remaining pre dreadnoughts? The predreadnoughts, especially the older ones, would be better used in coastal bombardment for invasions. They are better for this than dreadnoughts, as they are more expendable. What I mean is you really aren't going to use them as the battle line (though they may suppliment it), but if you lose a predreadnought to a coastal gun it won't be as a bad a hit in terms of VPs or naval strategy. And if a predreadnought can be considered expendable, then the coast defense ships even more.

Those pics look sweet! are there more dutch ships or only three like the french?

The Dutch get 4 Coast Defense ships, 3 Light cruisers, and 8 torpedo boats. I may adjust that if I can find more information on Far East Deployments, but that's what's in game right now.

Also, the 3 Light cruisers carry Fairey III seaplanes, in Dutch colors (otherwise same as the British Fairey IIID with floats)

As I am a sucker for detail *sigh* ... one little comment (no big deal) .. but the BB De Ruyter would be a Koningin (Queen) Regentes class, not a Koningen (Kings) Regentes.

Sorry about that. Half the sources I have seen concerning the ship calls it "Koningen Regentes". Will fix.

No subs?

At this point no. I can confirm a small group of submarines in operational service in the '20s, but I can not confirm any of them on duty in the Far East. If new information becomes available I will add some in, but as of right now I can can find no specific data on Dutch submarines in the Pacific 1922-1930.

Let me give you some info on that:

The system for your time period is quite simple: Dutch submarines intended for home service had the prefix 'O', while those intended for service in the East Indies had the prefix 'K'. This practice was abandoned as late as 1937 when the K-XIX and K-XX were renamed with 'O' prefixes, and submarines thereafter were considered interchangeable between home and overseas stations. So for your timeperiod all boats with the prefix ´K´ are in the East Indies.

K-I (K-I Class) - 1914-1926
Arrived in the East Indies 6 Nov 1916. (The first Dutch submarine in the Netherlands East Indies.)

K-II (K-II Class) - 1922-1937
Arrived in the East Indies 11 Dec 1923. (Together with K-VII and K-VIII)

K-III (K-III Class) - 1920-1934
Arrived in the East Indies 18 Dec 1920.

K-IV (K-III Class) - 1920-1936
Arrived in the East Indies 23 Dec 1921.

K-V (K-V Class) - 1919-1937
Arrived in the East Indies 26 Jan 1921.

K-VI (K-V Class) - 1921-1937
Arrived in the East Indies 31 Jan 1922.

K-VII (K-V Class) - 1922-1942
Arrived in East Indies 11 Dec 1923. (Together with K-II and K-VIII)

K-VIII (K-VIII Class) - 1922-1942
Arrived in East Indies 11 Dec 1923. (Together with K-II and K-VII)

K-IX (K-VIII Class) - 1923-1944
Arrived in East Indies 13 May 1924.

K-X (K-VIII Class) - 1923-1942
Arrived in East Indies 7 Dec 1924.

K-XI (K-XI Class) - 1924-1945
Arrived in East Indies 28 Dec 1925.

K-XII (K-XI Class) - 1925-1944
Arrived in East Indies 29 Dec 1926.

K-XIII (K-XI Class) - 1926-1942
Arrived in East Indies 13 Dec 1926.

Thats all the ´Kolonial´ (K) boats up to 1933 when K-XIV is commissioned.
Ofcourse in home waters there is still O-1 to O-11... but that´s a whole different story.

Anyway... Jorm is right, just look at http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/ pretty much seems to aggree with my sources so pretty reliable I would say.

Actually Dutchy, yours will speed up getting them in.

All of my paper sources simply stated that the Kolonien subs were scrapped or laid up in the '30s, and I didn't have the time to check out each and every one. But, with your info, I can pop in my info on the classes.

(FYI, I am adding them in now, but first I have to add in the new devices.)

Heemskerck and Tromp are already reinforcements, and Z3 and Z5 are gimmes. LOL.

We probably did leave a papertrail (don´t believe that having to fill out everything in triplicate is a ´new´dutch invention) , but something screwed up the system.. now what was it again?.. uhmm... oh yeah.. the German occupation [:D]

and to add to that-- in the pacific offcourse... the Japanese occupation.. we never did get a break anywhere (well maybe the few island in the carribian.. but good luck finding a papertrail there.. even nowadays)

Damn Germans [:D]

I had to make assumptions on some aspects (namely fuel capacity), but everything else is as near as I can see to sources available.
