"Moving" Devices

In the editor manual it states that "devices can be alteres, but they should never be moved".
Does that mean not moved outside the range they have listed (like for Allied or Japanese devices, specific slots for carrier-based aircraft) or that you should not move an airgroup from, for example, slot 2102 to an emtpy 2101 to open up move slots below it?

It depends.
If it says "only Allied devices slots XX-XX" then those you can move around. But if it says "device Y must be in slot X", then pardon the bold but do not even touch it
Airgroups you can pretty much move around (provided they are in allied or japanese slots). Devices, if it says a nation only, its probably radar and I wouldn't touch it if I were you.

I didn't intend to touch anything that the manual specifically stated needed to be in a specific slot.
I just want to organize some squadrons a bit better so I don't have to look around for them.
Thanks.

Unfortunately
the Editor does not move pilots with their airgroups! If you move squadrons (I just finished) you must also re-align all the pilots yourself. A pain in the back of the lap.

What do you mean "realign" pilots???? And how?

In the pilot DB, pilots are assigned to a squadron number. however, lets say 23 different pilots are assigned to Squadron 1, in slot 3. You move it to slot 4, but all the pilots are still calling slot 3. This will eventually lead to a bunch of headaches, and Squadron 1 will instead be fleshed out with random pilots.
What you wll have to do is with pen and paper, write down each and every pilot (prolly through in game), and then search for them one by one to change their squadron back to the one you moved.
IMO, not worth the effort, but it may be to you.

Great.
I've moved a lot of US carrier squadrons and float plane squadrons ... and saved.

I have been able to automate the process using michaelm's wonderful WITPLOAD and an external database with SQL capability. You could probably do it with Excel also:
1. Dump scenario with WITPLOAD (/e option) - creates .csv files
2. Import pilots file (WITPpltnnn.csv where nnn is the scenario number) into spreadsheet or database
3. Change - either manually or using SQL or a macro
4. Save
5. Load back into Scenario with WITPLOAD.
You can get WITPLOAD at spooky's. And always remember, back up in case you screw up! If you have questions, send me a PM - I'll be glad to help.

As long as the squadrons have pilots I don't care who they are - random pilots are fine with me.

WITPLOAD is a Godsend. Honestly, I doubt that War Plan Orange and the Combined Historical Mod would be happening, at least as good, detailed, and quickly, without it. A salute to michaelm!

Indeed! I used it extensively for scenario conversion for my map as well.

HOW do you use WITPLOAD? I downloaded and extracted the file but I can't get it to run when I click on the icon.

dereck,
Here is how I use it:
1) I copied the WitP\SCEN folder (so I don't scew up a scenario by mistake)
2) Placed WITPLOAD into this new folder.
3) Created a DOS command prompt shortcut in the new scenario folder
4) From the DOS prompt I run WITPLOAD, see attached text file for how.
