Arnhem Historical Campaign

Greetings

I am new to HTTR and am really enjoying the game. One question regarding the Arnhem Historical Campaign. In the briefing it refers to the Allied AI. Does this mean this scenario is designed to be played as Axis only or is it just a suggestion.

Thank you.

I think it mentions it to differentiate from the historical plus campaign where the AI behaves differently. I am quite sure it's playable from both sides.

Thanks for your reply

That makes sense, I just wanted to be sure.

For all the quality of the AI compared to other computer games, if you play the historical Arnhem scenario as the Axis, you'll have little problem winning. The British are so (as was true historically) undermanned and undergunned that you can annihilate the airborne division before the 30th corps even arrive.

As a more interesting query, has anyone ever managed to take the road bridge at Arnhem with the airborne division (and hold it) until the 30th corps can relieve them in the historical scenario? The best I've managed was spitting distance, where I was at the north bank with the front line just at the bridge on the 4th day. I had no offensive capability left, however, so had to defend until the 30th corps arrived to actually take it. Even then, I probably benefitted from the Germans forcibly counterattacking the rail bridge, which I did manage to take and hold.

All the campaigns can be played from either side, though due to their historical nature they don't all offer a balanced game; as has been pointed out, the Arnhem HC is a much easier task for the Axis than the Allies. This shouldn't be surprising when you consider the historical result! The comment about the Allied AI is indeed meant to differentiate this scenario from the AHC+ scenario in which the Allied AI has somewhat different objectives and so tends to behave a little differently.
