Found this while doing some research today. Its the capsized wreck of the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, as photgraphed in 2000. For being underwater (at the time) 61 years, she seems to be in surprisingly good condition. Pretty nifty.

Yeah, she's a war grave, and it was only with special permits that people were able to diver her in 2000.

I wonder if there is a shot of her other side...to see the damage that sank her

This was the only underwater shot I could find, but there is a 50 minute documentary on her that has some underwater shots, it might have it. http://www.hmsroyaloak.co.uk/

Wasn't the German fleet scuttled at Scapa Flow? That was a salvage area: the only place on earth where metal not affected by the nuclear age could be had. Don't know what the significance was. Can anyone elaborate?

I'm guessing that is a computer image made from a collage of shots. I doubt there would be enough light in the waters of Scapa Flow for that kind of photo. Anyone know?

The metal was all underwater before any nuc.s were let off and are thus unaffected/contaminated with the atomic age level of background radiation. The metal from the ships is used to build detectors /sensors and used as standards etc.

I had heard about that too.

And it is DEFINITELY a cool little collage. I had forgotten about the old Royal Oak just sitting there waiting for someone to explore her.
