Looks like a Hurricane, not sure of the model. You can see the wood stringers and fabric on the side.

If its a Hurricane, I'd say II, probably IID. A Hurri one didn't have underwing racks IIRC (note bomb at far right).

Engine cowl doesn't look right. Hmmmm

I first thought it was a Kittyhawk because of the cockpit, and then I thought it a spit. Not the best angle to shoot a plane.... no pun intended.

It shouldn't be Spit as wings don't have the elliptical look to the rear edge plus no gear near centerline of a/c in pic, it has a wide spread landing gear. To me it still looks to be in the Hurricane family.

Exhaust doesn't look right either for a Merlin but I couldn't think of any other wood and fabric construction aircraft.

Morane Saulnier comes to my mind, but I guess they were not used in pacific. I'd say some Dutch recon plane.

I don't know why, but the cockpit and wing keep screaming P-40! at me.... wierd.

I think thats a stretch. And yet, there's something about the pilot's garb that screams Russian. Maybe its the pantlegs tucked into the boots.

that engine mount just screams "tiger moth" to me, but that is impossible as it was a old biplane. It DOES make me speculate that it is a (old) british engine mount. Alas, still NO IDEA what it could be.......................

My first thought was Hurricane, too - but the engine cowling really doesn't look right. However, it may just be the photo - after all, where's the propellor?

Steve.

My vote is for MS406, Cockpit and nose cowling doesn't look right for a Yak-7
