Another Newbie Question Regarding Ground Forces

The ground unit icon at a nearby Japanese base recently vanished. Is this do to: (1) I have not reconned the base recently, (2) the unit died because of a lack of supplies, (3) the unit moved away and I just missed it, or (4) something else.

Most likely door number one (recon) but possibly door 3. Try reconning again and the unit will likely reappear when a suitable detection level is reached.

Detection levels degrease over time so you will want to recon
all the time, recon missions help train up pilots as well as give
you some info as to base strengths, also if you recon bases
before bombing missions you will increase your ability to damage
the base with bombers and bomberdment forces.
also bombing missions will give some recon after missions but always
recon before attacks to increase damage results.
