Units stats same?

I read somewhere from the Gary joel or someone that the units are the same amongst the "distinct" civs. So a Japanese Zero will be the same as an allied Mustang or an Sherman will be the same as a Panzer. That takes away a lot of the flavor of the different countries IMO . So, it really doesn't matter what country you choose inevitably the outcome is based on your generaling skill, right?

No, the units are the same within the same Player. So all German armor units have the same stats. However, a German armor unit can be very different from a Soviet armor unit, or a Western Allied armor unit. The units are very different at start, and can be researched so they continue to be different. For example, Japanese heavy bombers have a high torpedo value and long range, but have poor defense (Betty bombers). While the Western Allied heavy bombers are nearly worthless against ships but have a stronger defense (B-17s). Over time, these stats can change due to weapons research. That's just one of the things that makes this game very different than Axis & Allies.

You don't have individual aircraft models in this game. However, it's safe to assume early war German tac bombers represent Stukas, and British CV icon near Gibraltar represents Ark Royal with her Swordfish(es), etc.
Then, when you research certain factors, bringing your aircraft to new levels, you are free to imagine them as Corsairs, Me-262, P-47 or whatever is your favorite model you dream of.
But what happens if you take ahistorical path and develop German fighters with Zero range? No historical counterpart there. Icon representing certain unit is always the same, even if factors change (as they undoubtedly will).
At this level individual models as such don't matter much.
