Hi I've played many matrix games now TAO2-Korsun Pocket to name a few. I really enjoy the pacific theater. I still play PTO 2 for the snes. :D

Is it worth coughing up the $70 to play it? I mean thats a lot of money for me. I really am interested in multi player though...How large is this community? Will I have alot of opponents? Thanks for your responses.

You can find opponents easily enough--there's a special section in the forum for just that.

The game is definitely worth it to anyone with an interest in the subject. In fact it's the only game like it in town. Extremely detailed, lots ot keep track of turn to turn, I find it engrossing. Much better played versus a human, though, as the AI doesn't make it.

Not sure how large the overall community is but the boards here are always active, in fact the most active as far as I know for all of the Matrix products.

As regards multiplayer, we are now 1 week of game time into a 3 vs 3 game and I think many more people will come to see this as an excellent way of playing. There are at least two other team games on at present and there is quite a lot of interest whenever one is proposed.

Advantages:

You can talk over your ideas with your colleague generals (msn is great for this)
You only operate part of the monster game but see all of it unfold
You learn from each other
Timing it right you can have people doing their orders while other are sleeping - 27/7 gaming

Disadvantages:

You have to get some way of tracking where the turns have got to - we are using a weblog and that is working fine when people remember to use it!
You must be clear from the start what house rules apply.

I'd thoroughly recommend it, in fact I may well try to set another up after I've been away for a week on holiday over Easter- Budapest with flights at £80 for the two of us.... nice!

I've looked at that, but two issues bother me. One, the game must go awful slow, and two, there's always the good possibility (all but guaranteed) that certain participants will drop out as the game proceeds . . . awful slow . . . and then how to replace them.

Which side of the board are you on?

Thanks for the responses guys. IS there anyway I can find it at a discounted price somewhere? Im not making much right now so it would make it much easier for me if I could find it cheap.

Well once we got up and running we are managing about 5 turns a week, which isn't too bad. It should speed up as well. As regards people dropping out, weither tohers fancy the challenge or you just take over the command between those who are left.... early days yet.

I guess even if everyone drops out you still have had a different experinece of playing solo on PBEM.

It can make you happy it can make you want to commit seppuku sometimes, you will become really involved in this game and care about the situation in your game, you will grimace and bang your fist against the computer desk when you see your betties and nells heading unescourted into the allied cap as you forgot to give them a escort, You sob as one of your captial ships eats torpedo after torpedo and you will pray that it stays afloat just to get to port.

It will and can give you the greatest feeling of happiness when a plan goes right, and can ruin your day when somthing goes bad.

One of my favourite games and easily worth the cash i have paid, seeing i have been playing this gem snice August most days.
Constantly engaging, this game will not get old or tired for a LONG while.

I have bought some games that have cost me the equivalent of $70 and i have played them for about 10 hours... so a cost of $7 an hour, I have only had WITP for about 9 months now and I'd say I have used it about 50+ hours per month... 50 *9 is almost 500 hours (maths not my strongpoint) so to date its cost me 0.14 dollars per hour and thats going down every day as I get more involved in this game. So the real cost of the game is tiny..... provided you like it and want to play it.

The best way of making a decsiionis to read the AArs, if they turn you off then don't buy it, if they make you desperate to be part of it then the actual cost per hour of ownership will quickly become next to 0.

I hope to be in a multi-player game when 1.5 comes out, we aborted our first attempt after a screw up that made the Japanese password public.

I am the Tom in the Tom & Blackwatch AAR, we are running a pretty fast game we often get 3 turns a day in. I was also in one other game which ended in Japanese capitulation in March/April of 42.

The game is very detailed and I find it difficult to keep more than one fast playing game in my head at a time. One of the reasons I look forward to the team game is that it will play slower and involve other people so it will be a different kind of play. With luck this will make both games interesting but for different reasons.

So I think slow play can be an advantage in a way. As for people dropping out I bet you could find people to drop in as well. After all there were lots of command changes over the course of the real war, why not in your game as well? As long as some of the players are committed at any given time I think team games could go all the way to the end.

I think a few more team game AARs may help, we might try a split AAR for our game when it gets going. It will be a challenge to write it in a meaningful way but it could be very interesting.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who experiences ups and downs with this game. I love it to death, but dang, I wish I didn't worry about it so much. I drive to work asking myself questions like, "I hope it wasn't a mistake to bombard Port Moresby." I toss and turn trying to remember whether I ordered LRCAP over TF 27. Someone please remind me that it's just a game. [8D]

Hehe, turn's in the mail, Cap. Unfortunately, I caught a vanishing-unit bug. More in my e-mail.

Which is an opportunity to warn the original poster: there *are* some bugs left in this game. I haven't encountered any game-killers myself, fortunately. And a new patch is about to arrive.

Haveyou thought about buying Uncommon Valor? Its the predecessor to WiTP. The scale is limited to the South Pacific but it has so much there to play with and the play is similar. I think in your case you would like the fact that it is cheaper. You could get UV and once you have mastered it WiTP should not be too difficult a change. You can get it here, but I have seen it used and new on Ebay. Good Luck

Little Joe:
Why did the Japanese player surrender in March/April?

A few reasons:

We were both new to the game so we made newbie mistakes. He did not understand the relationship between attack and supply very well so his offensive bogged down in the Philipines. I counterattecked and took most of the island back and beat up his army. He reinforced and I was back on the defensive but it still hurt him.

He lost 3 BBs off Java and KB got beat up there as well. He had an army at Malang but could not get supply convoys through without big losses. Malang is a 0 port so they had to stay there unloading while the 200-300 aircraft I had on Java bombed them to peices. I had some CVs damaged but I could easily get convoys to Java and Singapore was possible as well. Only the Philipines were really cut off.

Singapore was still allied as well, though I was on the Johore Baru posistion. But I was starting to work on ways to reinforce there as well.

This was before the British start to get large numbers of Hurricanes or the big waves of American reinforcements really come in. There would have been a stalemate period and then an offensive against a Japan with no oil.

All in all the game was not that much fun for my opponent and frankly it was not that much fun for me. So we ended it by mutual agreement, I was the one who suggested that and he graciously accepted.

Sounds like the reasons ive been considering surrender, except i took the PI and Mayala with little problems, but my opponent has made Java into a island fortress due to me not striking fast enough in the DEI and not cutting off his escape routes.

Still pisses me off that fact he has what seems to be most of the american and brit carriers and navy defending the island, and countless Uk divisions. I thought about invading India, but i need oil quick.

Its may and i havent stepped foot on that dammed island [:@]

Note to self Attack with greater pace next time.

I had a very similar experience, except I used too much in the PI. After 1.5 comes out and I'm ready to start again, different strategy...
