its goes to a the desktop it crashes. have any suggestions.

What sort of video card are you using? Is it able to set it to 1024x768 resolution (the default resolution for Battles in Normandy) and is it running the latest video drivers? Can you generate a DXDiag file (details on how to do this are stickied on the Battles in Normandy support forum).
