Zoom ? what zoom ?

I'm surprised by the map zoom. It has nearly no effect. I barely see the difference between zoom-out and zoom-in. I'm surprised that nobody mention this point. Or is it due to my graphic configuration ? I have a notebook with extended large screen.
thx.

I get three leves of zoom, two of them have a very small difference. Maybe a game preference setting

Yeah,, more "zoom" and attach it to the mouse wheel. Also, make "rough" more stand out more.

Playing Japan is a real pain because it's hard to see the whole picture. Wish there was was one more zoom out.

Amen--that's the top of everyone's requests for the first patch, but it sounds like it will have to wait for the second.

yep but when we say "more zoom -out levels", we mean REAL zoom ... not just one centimeter more on each side of the screen! a real zoom out allowing to see at least two continents (or half the whole map) and allow real military planification. In fact, something between stratagic map (which is not easy to use because it's not the standard game mode) and regular map.

Amen--that's the top of everyone's requests for the first patch, but it sounds like it will have to wait for the second.

The good news is we figured that not everyone wanted to have the same zoom levels, so me made it configurable, like so much else in this game. You can actually change the zoom levels yourself.
Check the art.txt file, there are three lines:

Code: Select all

 // zooms for the game
 MAP_ZOOM,4800,5400,6000

 // chip scaling by zoom
 CHIP_SCALE,3000,3375,3750

 // Y ofsets by zoom
 ICON_Y_OFFSET,35,40,45

- The first set are the zoom at the three different levels. I would suggest you try changing them and see what happens (backup the file first). The numbers goes from the highest zoom to the lowest zoom and increasing the number increases the zoom level. That also means you can actually zoom further out at the highest level by lowering the number!

- The second I think decides the scaling of the unit icons on each zoom level.

- The third decides the x and y coordinate offset for each zoom level when placing the unit icons. The unit icon coordinates for each region is in another file.

So changing the first set of values and then playing around with the two other sets to find the optimal values you can completely customize the zoom level to your liking. I will put this post in the Mods and Scenarios sub-forum and I suggest once players has found new values they like that you share them with other players posting replys in that thread.

I hope that helps you find a zoom you like better.

Jorgen

does this in anyway affect the PBEM playability? in other words can people modify certain files yet still play on-line?

No, this change will not affect PBEM playability. These settings are completely individual.

I cannot say if some changes to the configuration files might affect play on line, right now no example springs to mind.
But I would think in most cases there should not be any problem.

I'd suggest some of the zoom mods get into the patch. I find it hard to believe that most people won't want the option of a bigger view.

It's great that it can be modded, but really, this is a basic feature that should work right out of the box.

Changing the CHIP_SCALE does not seem to have any affect. Are there bounds for this value? Has anyone else noticed a change when modifying the CHIP_SCALE variable?

Also, I'm not sure if this is elsewhere in the thread, but you can add zoom levels by just adding extra values for MAP_ZOOM, CHIP_SCALE and ICON_Y_OFFSET. I have yet to notice any affect from changing CHIP_SCALE though.
