Can units gain xp?

Sorry to rehash if it's already been mentioned but I don't see units gaining xp after successful battles etc.
Can units gain xp after each battle and thus can become better?
I loved the old Pacific General/Panzer General/Steel Panther games where units gain xp throughout the campaign and therefore be better at combat etc.
Maybe also put limits on quality of troop type builds for Germans and Japanese after 1944.
