Does unused research carry over?

If I have spare beakers at the end of a turn, not allocated to any particular research, do they carry over to the next turn?

Yes, If you "go over" the amount needed to advance (or one less if you get the favorable "round off roll") is subtracted and teh level is advanced, leaving you the difference in the beaker towards the next level.

Thanks. But what if I produce, say, five extra beakers and don't assign any of those extra five? Should I just produce five extra supply or something instead?

I would - unused beakers that are not assigned to increasing any capability carry over in a "pool" too, so if you want to produce extra one turn to have enough the following turn to "finish off" more projects than one turns effort could support. In general though - unless you are the WA, supply is the priority and you don't have that luxury.

Actually, by leaving some beakers unsused, you are not actually producing anything. The net impact is that you won't use up the resources so you will still have these, but you won't gain extra factory points the next turn, so you will still have to pay for these beakers again in the next turn. The way to look at beakers on the production screen is a way of reserving production points (factory and resource) to be used for research. The act of reserving these points by creating beakers does not actually spend the points, only allocating them on the research screen spends the points. So if you don't use the beakers there is no advantage the next turn that wouldn't be gained by just not creating the beakers in the first place (which is you save resources).

Hmm. Here is an example where I started the game and I used all the available production to build beakers. I got 14

Now the next turn i spend everything on beakers and when I go to the research screen I have 37. It sure looks like the 14 beakers I bought the first turn carried over to combine with the 23 I bought the 2nd turn and I have 37 available.
Don't all those 37 actually exist?

You do seem to be correct that they carry over. I never realized this. They do appear to be built and usable in future turns if you don't use them up in the current turn. In your example they are no longer in any particular region so they can't be disbanded. It does seem that you can stockpile these if you want to. Learn something new every day.
