Carrier air battles

I notice that when I launch my CAGs at an enemy CV group, and attack them, their planes comeback at my CV fleet that launched the attack. This was pretty neat as its like they counter attack on my turn with their own CAGs. Does this happen anytime a CV launches a strike on another CV fleet?

Yep.

The one thing I havent figured out is, this...if my CAG has range 4 and your CAG has range 2, and I engage at beyond your CAG range, how can they come back at me? Make sense?

Any of the developers want in on that question? [;)]

Happenes to me all the time. My Jap CAG range 4 or more, versus range 2 U.S. ....somehow those Corsairs got extended fuel tanks!!

Interesting, I would think you CAG going an extra 2 to attack is a bug not sure though since I have not had a great carrier battle in the pacific. I lost my navy in one great battle. I only survived using my subs.

I really like this feature how they strike back. I am wondering will my planes strike back at the AI fleets too? Not sure about the range thing you mention.

Yes, they will.

I created a thread about the free speed increase on counter-strikes in the support forum and sent a save game with an example. Hopefully we'll find out soon what's up with this one.

I think the situation you described is due to the confusing semantics of this game. "Range" is only applied to the combat screen. ie who gets to engage the enemy from the variable range that combat takes place at. "Speed" is actually the map range that you can engage the enemy from different zones. So if you want to attack your enemy from a more distant zone, increase your "speed." Another example: All fighters begin the game with a "speed" of 1. Most heavy bombers begin the game with a "speed" of 4.

The Speed is the issue. My japanese carrier attacked a WA carrier from 3 sea zones away with an airgroup that had been researched to a speed of 3. The WA airgroup still got to counterstrike even though its speed was still only 2.

perhaps the distance was still only 2 and thats why they were able to attack? most pacific ocean zones seem to be a 2-point lines, so I wonder if we need to test a 4-speed cag against a 2-speed cag.

My plane was actually crossing a 1-point sea zone and a 2-point sea zone. I'm sure the total was 3 because the little green circle showing remaining movement points showed 0, but maybe the system didn't do the calculation right for the counter-attacking airgroup. There's still no response from the Matrix guys to my post on the support forum.
