question on surprise

Does the surprise benefit for attacking politically frozen zones apply to all combats against frozen zones in that turn, or only to the first such combat (other zones being "unfrozen" before you get to their combat)?

I believe it is supposed to only be the first. Thats why it behooves you to use the first one vs the US as Japan at Pearl. There are no other battles vs them which are of any consequence on the first turn of attack that I can see.

It is definitely only the first attack. Everything becomes unfrozen after that attack.

Someone from Matrix discussed this a week or so ago saying that they felt that with three month turns, a whole turn's worth of surprise seemed excessive.

Then again, for something like Barbarossa it woasn't like they attacked any particular place "first". The casualties were huge in the first three months all across the front because "surprise' was not confined to a single area.

Similarly in the Pacific when the Japanese attacked, it was not just Pearl Harbor that was "surpised" but UK ships and posessions as well.

I'd like to see a toggle or a "selector" to be able to vary the number of areas that get the surprise bonus.

low priority, but one o those things that "bugs ya"... at least for me...

I agree that it would be nice to see a variable number of battles be affected by the surprise rule. Something random such as rolling a 6 sider might be fun.

However, I think this would involve a fair amount of reprogramming considering the way the areas are currently unfrozen when a side is attacked.

Maybe there could be some sort of "coordinated attack" function. If I set up 3 attacks against Russia on my first invasion turn, and I set all 3 up before I actually conduct any one of them, then all 3 should get the surprise. Maybe I have to pay an extra supply point or two for the logistics of the coordination. Maybe that's too difficult to program in to the current structure, but it would be a nice addition.
